Letter from the Editor
With the clocks moving forward by an hour at the end of March (don’t forget!), it really is starting to feel more like spring. Let’s hope we can get out and enjoy some fresh air if we’d like to.
You’ll find local things to do and community news in your issue, to keep you up to date. Events include two walks plus an indoor meeting about ‘Operation Turtle Dove’ from the RSPB Stort Valley Group; new members are welcome. There’s also a performance from the Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society (29th March) at the Bishop’s Stortford College Memorial Hall; sounds very interesting. Additionally, you are invited to try out lawn bowls during the Bishop’s Stortford Bowling Club’s open days (5th and 6th April); all ages are welcome. No appointment is necessary, just turn up in your trainers and get bowling!
There are always events happening in your library to discover, so why not pop in, and we also hear about the free weekly 5k parkrun community event at Castle Park – you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate every Saturday at 9.00am. Castle Park is also the location for Herts Health Walks (walks also take place in Thorley and soon will be from the Herts and Essex Hospital). These free sociable walks are led by supportive volunteers. Why not find out more about all the activities I’ve mentioned?
Club news includes the results of the 2024-25 Winter Series of marathon canoe races which culminated in a final event on the Grand Union Canal in January. A team of 16 from BSCC were amongst the 114 competitors, and 12 of these won medals on the day: https://stortfordcanoe.weebly.com The Judo club also shares news of competition results. At the London Area open 12 gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals were achieved and at The Scottish International three gold, three silver and six bronze medals were also achieved: www.bishopsstortfordjudo.com Incredible results for both clubs and they would be pleased to hear from you if you’d like to find out more about them.
After sharing the details last month that Isabel Hospice volunteer Renée Friend has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours List, she has now written an article for us about receiving this news. Plus, Renée updates us on an In Memory Carol Service, organised by Elaine and ‘Sedge’ Sedgwick, which has raised a fantastic £1370.00 for the Hospice.
In other charity news we hear from Hummingbird Cancer Support who share some uplifting thoughts to inspire us. We also hear that Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank has recently welcomed Jim Tatchell as its new Chair of Trustees. Jim has been the Treasurer for the last six years and has expressed his gratitude for the support and encouragement that the Food Bank receives from the whole community in Bishop’s Stortford.
Katie from Cards for Bravery is proud to be hosting the 10th Anniversary Bravery Ball (7th June), it’s such a significant milestone of supporting families facing hospitalisation and serious illness. If you’d like to attend or learn more about sponsorship and donation opportunities details, you can visit: www.cardsforbravery.com/braveryball
Local schools, as usual, also share some of their recent updates inside the Flyer. We hope you enjoy reading this early springtime issue and thank you for all your support.
With best wishes
