Letter from the Editor
As we move into early summer, with maximum daylight hours in front of us, you’ll find plenty of events, activities and community news here to help you make the most of June and beyond!
The annual Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day takes place on Saturday 20th June. There’s so much to see and do for all ages and you’ll find the details inside your Flyer. The theme for this year is ‘Stortford Old and New’ – Past meets present – celebrating the town’s history and its future. Don’t miss out on visiting this community event!
There’s a Quiet Book Club in the town library on Mondays (apart from Bank Holidays) where you can enjoy a quiet reading hour from 5pm with time at the end for an informal chat about what you are reading and to connect with fellow book lovers. Friendly Fridays (2-5pm) offers conversation and a selection of board games including Scrabble, Chess and Backgammon plus the Summer Reading Challenge launches in the library on Saturday 4th July. June sees the start of open air productions at Hatfield Forest, with William Shakespeare’s “Othello” (23rd June); “Pinocchio” (10th July) and “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” (6th August). Plenty to keep everyone occupied.
In local charity news we discover that the Herts and Soul Summer Concert at Bishop’s Stortford College ‘Now that’s what I call the 80s’! is in support of Isabel Hospice (28th June). Volunteers from Isabel Hospice will be serving refreshments. Renée from the Hospice reminds us that all the care and support to patients and their families is free, so the charity does rely on, and appreciate, the continuing support of our incredible local communities. Katie, the founder of Cards for Bravery which is a local charity supporting hospitalised and chronically ill children, young people and their families, is proud to tell us that it is the Charity of the Year (2026) for Jackson Square Shopping Centre. Katie says: “Partnerships like this help us reach more children and families facing incredibly challenging circumstances, while also strengthening the support we provide within the local community.”
We have news from local groups, including Cycle Stortford. They are delighted to support Bishop’s Stortford Town Council in organising its third annual ‘boundaries’ mass cycle ride. This year, the ride will break through Stortford’s ancient parish boundary to aim for the Henry Moore Foundation at Perry Green (11th July), and it’s open to all cyclists aged 14 or over. Why not read more about it in your magazine? The Royal British Legion Bishop’s Stortford Branch invites us to celebrate Armed Forces Day in Castle Park (27th June) with a service at the War Memorial at 2.00pm, having assembled at 1.30pm, plus Military and Armed Forces themed stalls and Emergency Services and the local Air and Army Cadet Units will be in attendance. Another local group, the Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club, has made a triumphant return to the Hertfordshire Major League following the final at Hitchin. After 43 events from swimmers aged 9 to 18 the Club finished top of the League by 16 points. BSSC will be promoted to Division One next season. Congratulations to all at BSSC for this inspiring achievement.
Your primary and secondary school news is also in this issue. Enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
