Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine June ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your June issue of the Flyer and doesn’t it feel like we’re at the gateway to summer? Perhaps you’ll take part in the 30 Days Wild challenge by the Wildlife Trusts, it’s free and gets us appreciating nature. I hope you’ll find your magazine full of useful ideas, events and inspiration, as we make the most of the opportunities we currently get with these light evenings!
With the Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day on Saturday 21st June, it sounds like an ideal way to enjoy the Summer Solstice, with plenty of things to see and do for all ages. Other activities include a weekend of events at the Bishop’s Stortford library, in celebration of the centenary of Hertfordshire Library Service (details and dates are inside) and the summer concert on the 5th July from the Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society and Bishop’s Stortford Band. You could also visit or contact the Bishop’s Stortford Tourist Information Centre; a treasure trove of information on things to do and events!
In this issue we feature an article from Denise at the Bishop’s Stortford RBL – a heartfelt report on the war memorial event in Castle Park which took place to commemorate VE Day 80. Hundreds of residents gathered and the occasion included young people from local schools delivering verse, poignant prose and 1940s music to pay tribute. There are more details about VE Day 80 activities from schools in the education section of your magazine.
News from local groups includes the ten-year anniversary of the Bishop’s Stortford Breathe Easy Group. A birthday party was held with special guests and new members are always welcome. The Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford tells us about its ninth Young Musician Competition at Bishop’s Stortford College, you can read about the winners and the next stage of this competition inside. Have you heard about the Bishop’s Stortford u3a? It’s for adults in the Bishop’s Stortford area who want to meet new friends or try out some new activities. No age restrictions, just that you are not in full-time employment. New members are welcome. Additionally, the Bishop’s Stortford Camera Club shares news about its recent annual exhibition and its current outdoor summer programme.
Local charity updates include a reminder from Hummingbird Cancer Support Group of the support they can offer; they now meet at Great Hadham Country Club. Renée from Isabel Hospice tells us another Jigsaw Sale will take place in the autumn after the success of the latest one, which raised in the region of £800.00. The charity will also be at the Bishop’s Stortford Carnival and, as part of Tonnes of Care, will have some more mobile donation days at Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club (details in your magazine). Congratulations to the Tiger Sharks, local children aged 8 to 12, who raised over £2,500 at this year’s swimathon, for Cancer Research and Marie Curie. It is such an amazing achievement. We also find out that Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club (BSRFC) raised almost £6,000 to support the work of Red Kite, this incredible amount was generated throughout Ladies Day 2025. To discover more about these charities, and how you can support them, do look in your Flyer.
I hope you enjoy this month’s issue and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
