Letter from the Editor
I hope you can appreciate the great outdoors as much as possible this month and perhaps take part in ‘30 Days Wild’ organised by the Wildlife Trusts – it’s free and good fun for all ages! June is such a lovely time of year.
Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day
There’s plenty to catch up on this time, with a wide range of community news and events. As well as the Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day (15th June), with lots for all the family, there’s also a 12 mile cycle ride around the edge of the town ‘Beat the Boundaries’ coming up (13th July – aged 14 and above – do read more inside).
Manuden Open Gardens
Other summer events include the Manuden Open Gardens (16th June) and the Much Hadham Open Gardens (23rd June). At Hatfield Forest there’s “Solstice in the Forest” (21st June) with music, a barn dance and Morris dancing and then an open air performance of “Hamlet” (25th June). The Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society’s summer concert is at the Methodist Church (29th June) and students and under 16s are free. The town library holds CareFest ‘24 (13th June) with a range of health and wellbeing activities. There will also be a Book Group networking evening at the library (19th June) – sounds intriguing.
Isabel Hospice update us on fundraising events, which includes a Teddy and Toy Tombola stall at the Carnival and an annual Garden Party in the grounds of Wickham Hall (18th June). Then the St James Festival (13th and 14th July) with music, floral displays, dance, bell ringing, refreshments and more, takes place at St James Church, St Barnabas Centre and Emmaus Centre. Why not look in your issue for details about these events?
Bishop’s Stortford Charity news
Charity news include a Memory Hub on the first Monday of the month at the Methodist Church, run by the Alzheimer’s Society. If you or a family member/friend are concerned about dementia or if you are supporting someone with dementia, you’re invited to come. Hummingbird Cancer Support Group reminds us that they meet at South Mill Arts Centre every Monday, run by local volunteer therapists, to aid members through their treatment, including physical complementary treatments like Reiki, Reflexology, Massage, Indian Head Massage and beauty treatments. We also hear about the Isabel Hospice community appeal to help raise funds for vital medication; only 30% of the medication in the In-Patient Unit is funded by the NHS. All these charities would be pleased to hear from you.
The Royal British Legion Bishop’s Stortford Branch were delighted at the turn out for their Service of Dedication for their new Branch Standard. The Branch Committee would like to thank all who took part. Plus, we hear from The Hundred Parishes Society about the barley-growing area of the Hertfordshire and Essex borders. The malting of barley in preparation for its use in the brewing industry was a significant activity in some villages and market towns. You can read more about this inside – and the Society also feature a wide range of self-guided walks on their website.
As well as your local school news, we share information about the recent inaugural Stortford Repair Café. A pop-up event, where repairers give their time free of charge and it builds on the success of the one in Sawbridgeworth. Find out more in your magazine!
Thank you for your support and enjoy your June Flyer.
With best wishes
