Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your July issue. It’s full of local events and community information to help you make the most of the summer!
Bishop’s Stortford Library reminds us about the Summer Reading Challenge (4th July – 6th September). Children can read six books, or complete six library and book themed challenges to win a certificate and a medal. The Bish Bash Music Festival is back (Sworders Field, 17th and 18th July) with local bands to tribute bands, stalls and children’s entertainment. Plus, the Bishop’s Stortford Ukulele Society annual festival takes place at Sworders Field (the bandstand, 2nd August) with live music, other local ukulele bands, special guest acts and more.
Jono Forgham, who recently relocated to Norfolk, is back to present ‘40 Years of Bishop’s Stortford Nature’ at the RSPB Stort Valley meeting (14th July, Bishop’s Park Community Centre). Visitors are welcome (£5). At Hatfield Forest Pinocchio (10th July); The Tale of Peter Rabbit (6th August) and The Three Musketeers (5th September) all take place this summer. Plus, if you enjoy orienteering, there’s a newly-renovated permanent course around Southern Country Park. Thank you to Chigwell and Epping Forest for this information, who recently held a “Come and Try It” orienteering session there. In addition, supporters of Sir David Attenborough may like to visit the special exhibition about him and his work in nearby Saffron Walden Museum (until the 6th September).
In charity news Renée from Isabel Hospice tells us about the annual charity Garden Party in the gardens of Wickham Hall Farmhouse, hosted by David and Suzy Harvey DLL, which raised £900.00 of vital funds for the Hospice. We also hear that Isabel Hospice is running its annual ‘Donate to Feel Great campaign’, which encourages us to turn our summer clear-outs into support for local hospice care. Hummingbird Cancer Support Group is proud to celebrate its 20th anniversary and shares a report with us about all it provides – the friendship, emotional support, wellbeing activities, practical advice, and a place where nobody has to face cancer alone. It’s a completely volunteer-run organisation. We also hear that a charity quiz night supporting the Friends of Water Lane Hall recently raised over £1,350. The organisers hope to see you all at the next quiz!
Citizens Advice East Herts offers free, confidential advice and this month highlights resources and information available through its Debt and Money section of the website: https://citizensadviceeastherts.org.uk You can see them at Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church (Tuesdays, 10am to 2pm). They are also holding a Budgeting Workshop at the Church. Thank you to the Bishop’s Stortford Royal British Legion for an update about a commemoration at Bishop’s Stortford War Memorial (24th May) to remember the 15th anniversary of the end of the Iraq War and honour the British Armed Forces involved. We also have a report from the new town mayor, Cllr Martin Adams. He offers his thanks to “the fantastic Cllr Richard Townsend, who has served tirelessly for the past three years” and lets us know that his chosen charity for the mayoral year is the Holy Trinity Night Shelter. All the groups and charities I have mentioned in my letter would be pleased to hear from you.
Your primary and secondary school news is also in your Flyer. Enjoy this summer issue and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
