Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine July ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome

Letter from the Editor

As I write your July welcome letter I can’t quite believe we’re heading to the longest school holidays, let’s hope the weather is good and we can make the most of summer! There are plenty of things to do and lots of information inside – and you can always pop into the Tourist Information Centre for more ideas, it’s a place I always enjoy visiting!

Events this time include the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge at your library. Children can join in for free and help keep reading skills sharp during the summer holidays. It launches on Saturday 5th July and runs until Saturday 6th September. We also find out about Live at The Bandstand (Sworders Field, Saturday 26th July), this free community music event has something for everyone. If you’re interested in outdoor theatre there are some shows taking place at Hatfield Forest up to early September plus school holiday children’s events at Bishop’s Stortford Museum. The RSPB Stort Valley group also updates us on its July events (Jono Forgham returns as a guest speaker) and new members are always welcome. I’ve previously joined one of their nature walks and it was really enjoyable.

We hear about a campaign from Age UK for all public services to always offer a post, phone or face to face option. It sounds a very good idea. Details are inside about how you can support this. Other charity and local community group news includes an update from the Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank regarding a thank you event they recently held for their volunteers. There are a number of different ways people can help as a volunteer, such as a few hours a month at the Food Bank or delivering food parcels or helping at supermarket outreach events. We also hear about Helping Herts Week in July, where communities come together to raise money for local children and young people. Plus, the Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth Street Pastors tell us what they do. Street Pastors are never on their own, always part of a team and are fully trained volunteers. The Food Bank, Helping Herts and Street Pastors would all be pleased to hear from you; why not find out more about them in your magazine?

Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club shares great news about the achievements of their youngest swimmers (9-12 year olds) and Graham from Cycle Stortford updates us on some progress news regarding Cycle Route North. Thank you to Renée Friend BEM from Isabel Hospice for details and photos from her recent Royal Garden Party visit to Buckingham Palace, accompanied by her younger daughter Shelly. Renée, who has volunteered for the charity for nearly 40 years, said: “We had the most amazing afternoon in an iconic setting… I have made so many special memories, which I will treasure always.” We also find out that over £1400.00 was donated to Isabel Hospice at the recent Garden Party at Wickham Hall Farmhouse, home of David and Suzy Harvey DL who generously host this annual event. The money raised helps the charity continue to provide free care and support to patients and their families, locally and throughout Eastern Hertfordshire: www.isabelhospice.org.uk

As usual, your regular school news is inside your Flyer. We hope you enjoy reading your magazine and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
