July 2024
Letter from the Editor
As I write we are moving into the middle of summer; let’s hope we get the weather to be able to enjoy the great outdoors as much as we’d like to and are able to. There is so much to experience, from the many brightly coloured flowers, to butterflies and dragonflies, to the early birdsong!
Bishop’s Stortford July Community Events
Amongst this month’s community news and events, and still on the theme of being outside, we hear from the Friends of Southern Country Park (in Bishop’s Stortford) about their ‘Love Parks Day’ event on Tuesday 30th July, which sounds full of activities. You can also find out about other parks in the district. In addition, The Hundred Parishes Society shares a fascinating article on some of the old railways and highlights walking routes from current railway stations – plus a new series of Quiet Lane walks that do not use footpaths – which are all available from their website. Plus, there’s plenty to do at Hatfield Forest this summer.
Bishop’s Stortford Music Events
If you enjoy listening to music The Harmonaires Choir is holding a summer evening recital celebrating the music of female composers and lyricists on Saturday 13th July, at The Methodist Church in Bishop’s Stortford (there’s a retiring collection in aid of the charity Refuge, supporting women and children).
Also on Saturday 13th July, the Harlow Chorus is holding an evening of theatre and opera favourites at St Michael’s Church, Windhill. Why not find out more?
The Bishop’s Stortford Library
The Bishop’s Stortford Library is running this year’s Summer Reading Challenge (6th July to 8th September), designed to keep children reading over the summer holidays. It’s free for children to join the library and to take part. On Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July, St James the Great, Thorley, is holding its annual Festival of Flowers and Music, with plenty to do for all the family. Also, there’s a Tower Tour at St Michael’s Church on Sunday 28th July, with the chance to learn more about the history, look at the clock and the bells and see the view. With an opportunity at the end of the tour to have a go at ringing a bell!
Charity updates include fundraising news and events from Isabel Hospice; funds which help Isabel Hospice continue to provide free essential palliative care within our local communities. There is also a personal story from Jonathan, a husband and father of two from Bishop’s Stortford, about his determined battle with an extremely rare cancer. The family is asking for support to help with vital treatment and a fundraising campaign has been launched.
Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford
In this issue there’s a report from the Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford, Cllr. Richard Townsend. As well as saying “I am honoured to have been elected to serve a second term” part of his report includes drawing our attention to the many summer performances and festivals occurring in the centre of town and across our schools and local organisations.
Bishop’s Stortford FC
Local club and group news includes the appointment of Steve Castle as the new manager of Bishop’s Stortford FC and two July events from RSPB Stort Valley. To find out more about both organisations – and everything else I have written about here – do look inside your magazine. We have plenty of school news for you to catch up with too.
We hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
