Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine January ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome
Letter from the Editor
A very warm welcome to our first issue of 2025 and we hope this new year starts well. As usual, there’s plenty of content covering a range of local community news and events, to help inform and inspire us through January and beyond.
Do you fancy trying something different for the New Year? Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is looking for new singers in all voice parts. The choir is preparing for an Easter performance and they would be pleased to hear from you. There are also several events in January from the RSPB Stort Valley Group – a local winter walk and an indoor meeting (Bishop’s Stortford) plus a visit to an Essex RSPB reserve. Additionally, there’s always something happening in your local library; a ‘warm space’ for everyone.
News from other local groups includes a detailed article from the Bishop’s Stortford Civic Federation about what they do, some of their history, recent activities and how you can get involved – it’s a really useful update. The Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford shares information on its annual Youth Competitions and the results, alongside news on its Christmas Collections which are held at a number of local supermarkets raising funds to give Tesco vouchers to families in the community.
Cycle Stortford is determined that 2025 will be a pivotal year for cycling in Bishop’s Stortford with
spokesperson Graham Oxborrow saying: “With more and more of the new houses around Stortford being occupied, congestion and pollution on the town’s roads will inevitably increase unless good active travel links are provided to encourage more people to walk and cycle.” The group welcomes involvement from anyone interested in promoting cycling. Last year, 2024, was a special 65th anniversary for the Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club and they have enjoyed flower arranging demonstrations, visits to local gardens and to a rose trial garden, as well as taking part in church flower festivals and competitions. Their next meeting is on the 4th February, visitors are always welcome. Plus, the Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club reports on successful results in Round Two of the London National Arena Swimming League Premier Division. It’s only the second time in the Club’s history (previously 2014) that they have qualified for the National Arena League London final. Good luck to all!
Charity updates include a message of thanks from David, at the Bishop’s Stortford Night Shelter, to everyone who has and continues to help them support and enable some of the most vulnerable in society. If you want to help make a difference in someone’s life, but don’t know how to, David invites you to get in touch at: htnsmanager@outlook.com We also hear from Isabel Hospice about their “Gift of Time” campaign, encouraging people to explore volunteering. They’re holding volunteer information sessions (14th January, 6pm, Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club or 18th January, 10.30am, Living Well, Welwyn Garden City). Why not look inside your magazine to find out more about the activities, groups and charities I’ve highlighted in this letter? As well as about other groups too.
Additionally, there’s primary and secondary school news for you to catch up on. We do hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you very much for your support and contributions.
With best wishes
