Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine February ’26 | Free Magazine Welcome
Letter from the Editor
As we move into the second month of the year you can really notice the lengthening of the daylight hours. Seeing those beautiful first snowdrops while outside is very uplifting.
There’s plenty of community news and events in your February Flyer, including the opportunity to meet with the PCSOs at the Bishop’s Stortford library (19th February) for a cuppa and to ask questions about your neighbourhood. You can also book a tutorial to help you use the NHS App and there’s an author talk. Why not call into the library?
This month the 2026 Festival of Literature at Bishop’s Stortford College has a selection of Community Events open to the public, alongside the usual schedule of Schools’ Events. The full programme, including how to book tickets for the Community Events, is on the College website. In our last issue we mentioned the local branch of “Smartphone Free Childhood”. Just a reminder that they are holding a panel event at the Bishop’s Stortford High School (5th March) which may be of interest. The Group’s email is: SFCstortford@outlook.com
In local charity news Isabel Hospice is welcoming book donations, with donated books helping them raise vital funds. We also hear from Renée Friend BEM, Ambassador, about some recent Isabel Hospice events: “We are extremely grateful for the support of our local communities and businesses, which enables us to continue to provide free care and support locally and throughout East Hertfordshire.”
Hummingbird Cancer Support Group has received an award. Judges praised their commitment to being fully volunteer based. This award celebrates past achievements and reinforces Hummingbird’s mission to help individuals live well during and beyond cancer. We also hear from Holy Trinity Night Shelter and Community Outreach, which works all year to help those who are homeless or threatened with homelessness in our local community. They rely on local volunteers. All these charities would love to hear from you if you would like to help or find out more.
Club and Group news includes 80th birthday celebrations for the 7th Bishop’s Stortford Guides Unit, with the cake-cutting performed by Dinah Hutchin, a special guest whose connection to the unit dates back to 1948. Plus, the unit’s current leader, Nicola Mitchell, received her 30-year service award for her commitment to guiding at the event. They are in need of enthusiastic volunteers to help inspire the next generation of girls. We also have an update from the Bishop’s Stortford WI, who now meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Water Lane United Reformed Church. Alongside speakers at each meeting members also meet up at other times to share their interests, such as book clubs, walking, craft and knitting groups or playing Scrabble or Rummikub. New members are welcome. Plus, we discover that Stortford Youth Choir is launching Junior Choir, aimed at children in Years 3-6, rehearsing on Mondays 5-6pm at St Michael’s Primary School.
Thank you to Tricia from the Pudding Club Carers’ Group who invites you to join them for a chat over a cuppa and pudding at the St Barnabas Centre in Thorley; whether the person you care for is newborn or 90. They meet monthly and you would be warmly welcomed. Along with your regular school news, there’s plenty to read in this issue! Thank you for your support.
With best wishes
