Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine February ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome

Letter from the Editor

As I write it’s good to know that our daylight hours are gradually lengthening. Let’s hope we can all enjoy signs that spring is ahead, like when the snowdrops begin to appear. I love these beautiful, delicate and uplifting flowers. In this issue you’ll be able to catch up on a range of local community news and events, to use as the month progresses.

Are you looking for ideas of things to do? The library – a ‘warm space’ for everyone – has a very busy month with activities and events for all ages, including over half term. If you enjoy taking photos, the Bishop’s Stortford Camera Club meets weekly and new members of all ages and abilities would be welcome. We also hear from Cycle Stortford. Amongst other things they want to promote active involvement in cycling, particularly for new or less confident riders, and community events for 2025 are planned.

Herts and Essex Badminton Club invite anyone who has played badminton before (however long ago) to find out more. They play doubles, mainly at the Herts and Essex Sports Centre. Sessions range from juniors and beginners to intermediate adult players and a local league standard. Plus, the RSPB Stort Valley Group share news about February events, with a birding walk; reserve visit and indoor meeting.

Updates from other community and charity groups includes a thank you and reminder from the Tidy Up Bishop’s Stortford Co-ordinator. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered in 2024 and a confirmation that the next two clear-up dates are the 8th March and 10th May. The Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford shares news that £7720.27 was raised during its annual Christmas Collection – a fantastic achievement. They are very grateful to all the members of the public who contributed; the money will be used to fund next year’s Tesco vouchers for families. Also, this time we have an invitation to carers. You’re invited to join other carers for a chat over a cuppa and a pudding with the ‘Pudding Club Carers’ Group’. Perhaps an opportunity to receive information and you’d be warmly welcomed.

The Flyer is very pleased to share the news that long-standing Isabel Hospice volunteer Renée Friend has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours List, for services to charity and her community. A wonderful recognition – Renée has been volunteering for nearly four decades. On hearing the news, she said: “I felt amazement, then delight. It is such a privilege to be recognised for my work with Isabel Hospice, which has always been so close to my heart. To contribute to a cause that changes lives every day has been its own reward.” You can read all about this inside your issue.

The Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church tells us about the love hearts that have been knitted during their regular craft and knitting groups, which will be displayed in their windows for Valentine’s Day. The church also hosts the Oasis Lounge cafe with free activities, free wifi, and a donation-only café. Why not find out more about all these activities, groups and charities in your magazine? Plus, we have primary and secondary school news for you.

Thank you for all your support. We hope you enjoy your Flyer, perhaps alongside a warm drink.

With best wishes
