The Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine February 2024
Welcome to your February issue of The Bishops Stortford Flyer magazine.
Inside The Bishops Stortford Flyer magazine February edition. Amongst the community news and local events in this issue there’s a great choice of things to do. Also updates from local community groups and charities.
Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine February 2024 Welcome
Welcome to your February 2024 Flyer; we have all the usual community news, information and events for you inside. With the daylight slowly increasing, snowdrops should be coming out to add a welcome burst of early colour to our landscape and, if you like them, do enjoy your pancakes this month!
Hertfordshire Health Walks update us on their four free Bishop’s Stortford walks; you may feel inspired to join these volunteer-led friendly walks (and there are other Hertfordshire Health Walks nearby too). We also include a self-guided 3.5 mile circular walk from Birchanger. This Hundred Parishes Society walk includes two woods, with wildflowers in the spring. Find out the details of this walk – and many other routes – here: www.hundredparishes.org My family and I always enjoy their walks.
Bishop’s Stortford Local Groups
News from local groups includes an update from Bishop’s Stortford u3a. If you’re not in full-time employment you can join, whatever your age. Interest groups include exercise, art, writing, books, history, singing, walking, language, craft, games, science and IT; it’s so extensive! We also hear from the Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club, set up 65 years ago and still going strong. To celebrate this anniversary the Club has a wide range of activities planned for 2024, they would love to welcome you as a visitor. Plus, The Arts Society Bishop’s Stortford tells us about its next meeting on the recent history of colour in textiles. A story of serendipity, science, war, innovation trial and error, environmental concerns, economics and fashion. Intriguing indeed.
It is somewhat strange to be writing this but King Henry VIII recently made a special appearance at the Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club, accompanied by all of his six wives at one time, in full Tudor costume! It was part of the new Captains Drive In, where Claire Smith, Henry Appiah and Frankie Gilder each drove in to commence the year as new Captains. The Golf Club has shared this news with us.
Charity Updates Bishop’s Stortford
In charity updates we have a special feature from ‘Helping Herts’ (they bring together charities united by a common goal – to improve the lives of children and young people in Hertfordshire). It’s a fascinating insight into what has been achieved so far, future plans and ways in which you may be able to help. Additionally, we have an informative article from Grove Cottage in Bishop’s Stortford, who help enhance the lives of individuals of all ages with learning disabilities and special additional needs.
Renée from Isabel Hospice shares information about a special long service certificate presentation event to volunteers of the Stortford Area Support Group, together totalling over 200 years of volunteering! Also, we find out that the retail arm of the charity is planning a new shop opening on South Street this spring. Volunteers would be warmly welcomed for both the shop and community fundraising. Why not find out more about all these charities inside your magazine? They would be very pleased to hear from you.
Events February
The town library has a packed events programme in February, including internet sessions, an author talk, half term events and Baby Rhyme Time and Storytime sessions. Don’t miss out! Plus, we have a range of primary and secondary school news for you. So do enjoy catching up with all this community information and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
