Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine December ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome

Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your December issue, which I hope during this very busy time, is a useful source of community information to navigate these next few weeks!

Christmas events include the Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church Christmas Tree festival (9th to 14th December), held in memory of Graham Hulme, the minister’s late husband. There’s also a Christmas Tree Concert by the Bishop’s Stortford Band (13th December, 7.30pm) where you’ll be surrounded by the Christmas trees. St James Church, Thorley has a number of services: Silent Night Service (7th December), Traditional Carol Service (21st December), Crib Service (24th December), Midnight Communion and a Christmas Day Service.

‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ is back for its fifth year (23rd December, 5pm to 6pm) at the Bandstand, Castle Park, raising funds for the Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank. Last year’s event brought in nearly £1000 for local families in need. Additionally, there are carols at St John’s church in Stansted, by the Harmonaires Choir (13th December), with a retiring collection for the charity Crisis.

Other events include Barringtons Santa Sleigh Ride (12th December) collecting for Isabel Hospice.

It starts at 5pm and finishes at the rugby club at 7pm; details are inside. The Winter Reads Challenge, for all ages, is now on at your local Herts library and there are Christmas festivities at Daisy May’s Farm in Elsenham – with all monies raised going back into the farm’s winter feed fund.

Hatfield Forest has a health and wellbeing event “Breathwork in the Forest” (14th December), and gentle “Walk with Us” walks around the Forest (3rd, 12th, 17th and 31st December) for all abilities.

As well as your regular school news we also have a number of local club, group and charity articles. These include an update and thank you from the Bishop’s Stortford Poppy Appeal organiser; a reminder that the Bishop’s Stortford u3a has over 50 diverse groups so there’s plenty of choice; results of the winter triples competition from the Bishop’s Stortford Bowling Club; December fixtures from the Bishop’s Stortford FC and member news from the Bishop’s Stortford Breathe Easy Group. All these organisations would be pleased to hear from you and would welcome new members and supporters.

Katie, the founder of Cards for Bravery, highlights that the charity is once again bringing smiles to hospitalised and seriously ill children, young people, and their families. They will be at Jackson Square Community Space (14th December, 12–4pm), assembling Christmas presents and handmade cards to send to children. Donations of brand new items such as soft toys, games, creative activities, toiletries and treats for parents and carers would be very welcome on this day.

Plus, we hear from Marcia, who at 81, has undertaken a skydive with her friend Lin. It is incredibly inspiring to read. Raising over £2000 for Parkinson’s UK, Marcia jumped in memory of her husband Clive, who died from Parkinson’s. Clive became the Rector of St James, Thorley and it was in his retirement that he developed it. Marcia said, “I pray that a cure for Parkinson’s may be found.” If you would like to donate: www.justgiving.com/page/marcia-slaughter-1

All of us at the Flyer would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support and to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

With best wishes
