Letter from the Editor

It’s incredible to be writing the December 2024 issue letter already! I hope the end of this year goes as well as possible. Your Flyer is packed with events and community updates, to take us through December and beyond.

Events include the Isabel Hospice Lights of Love remembrance services across the district, with nearby venues in Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth (find out more here: www.isabelhospice.org.uk/LightsOfLove). There are other Christmas events happening in support of the Hospice too as well as a Christmas Tree Collection and Recycling opportunity, 6th – 12th January 2025. The RSPB Stort Valley Group has several events in December and the Bishop’s Stortford library has shared an update on all its regular events; such a lot of choice!

We also hear from St Michael’s Church about a Bellringing Experience voucher for up to two people; what a unique way to view and support the church. Plus ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ (23rd December, 5-6pm, Castle Park Bandstand) enables the community to gather, sing and raise funds for charity. Last year it raised nearly £1400 for the Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank. Why not find out more about these activities inside?

News from other local groups includes the Pudding Club Carers’ Group. Are you the most important person in the life of someone who needs extra care? The Group meets on the third Monday of the month for a cuppa and pudding. The Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club shares news about the Swim England East Region Masters Championships where the team won 16 medals and swimmer Alyson was also presented with the British Swimming Masters Decathlon 2023 trophy. Fantastic results; congratulations to all.

Cycle Stortford recently helped run a 12 mile charity cycle ride as a fundraiser for ‘Helping Herts’. Helping Herts supports 12 local charities dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people and has raised nearly £300,000 this year. Cycle Stortford told us the event demonstrated that it is feasible for journeys to be enjoyed by bicycle within, across and around Stortford, even before completion of the strategic cycle network campaigned for by them. Bishop’s Stortford Rotary Club update us on the annual visit from Interact Clubs (Rotary Clubs for students at secondary school) plus about their recent speaker Jo, the founder of the Welbeloved Club named after her great-grandmother Doris Welbeloved. They provide a lunch for over 100 in the Memorial Hall, Sawbridgeworth on the first Sunday of every month.

Charity updates include news from Hummingbird Cancer Support Group about one-to-one treatments like reflexology and reiki through to group mindfulness, yoga and seated exercise and regular talks. They meet every Monday morning at Southmill Arts. We also hear from Katie at Cards for Bravery, a local charity helping to brighten the days of hospitalised and seriously ill children, young people and their families. She is asking for help with their annual Christmas Appeal – they’re aiming to create 150 packages and are seeking donations of items. You can email Katie katie@cardsforbravery.com as well as look inside your magazine to find out more about all these charities and groups. Additionally, we have primary and secondary school news for you.

The Flyer team would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and thank you for all your support and contributions.

With best wishes
