Letter from the Editor
Your August Flyer is packed with inspiring ideas of things to do and useful community information, to help everyone in your family make the most of this time of year.
School holiday and summer activities include drop in craft activities for children at Bishop’s Stortford Museum, as well as walk and talk events related to the town (the dates are inside your magazine). Would you like to try free angling sessions? These sessions (22nd and 23rd August, Hall Farm Lakes, Great Hallingbury) are perfect for beginners of all ages. Also, Henry Moore Studios and Gardens highlight its programme of family events and activities during August and there’s a self-guided circular walking route from the Hundred Parishes Society, which starts from Little Hadham, for you to discover. The Society also has many other walking routes to choose from; I’ve personally enjoyed walking along several of them!
The Bishop’s Stortford Library is helping children get ready for nursery or school. ‘Life Skills for Little Ones’ involve games and activities that enable children to develop independence in preparation for starting school (20th August and 27th August). Plus, with the summer reading challenge in full swing why not ‘Read to the Beat’ and come along to one of the Music Maker Stations? From the 27th July until the 26th August you can make harmonicas, rainsticks, castanets and more on Mondays or Wednesdays at the library, donations welcome. The library also wants us to know that they will be closed for a minor refurbishment from Monday 14th September until Saturday 26th September. Club and charity news includes an update from the Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club about its recent annual garden meeting, with a big thank you to Hannah and Michael for hosting. The Club reminds readers that visitors are always welcome at meetings, which are on the first Tuesday of the month at Manuden Community Centre. Bishop’s Stortford WI tell us they don’t meet at Water Lane URC in August but instead enjoy an evening garden party hosted by and courtesy of one of their members. Tim Howard-Smith, Bishop’s Stortford History Society, will be the WI’s next speaker (5th September, Water Lane United Reformed Church) talking about the Blue Plaques around the town. New members are welcome. We also find out about a recent event organised by the Bishop’s Stortford Breathe Easy Group at the community Hub, Jackson Square, to acknowledge and celebrate World Bronchiectasis Day.
Street Pastors, who visit the town centre from 10pm-2am on Friday or Saturday nights to care for people, such as chatting, charging mobiles and helping people to get home safely, would love to hear from you if you may be interested in joining them. There’s also an update from Renée at Isabel Hospice about recent summer events which have been well supported and helped raise invaluable funds. Plus, the charity is holding ‘Tonnes of Care’ mobile donation days (Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club), designed to make donating more convenient. Donations are of course also welcomed at Isabel Hospice’s shops. You can find out the mobile donation dates and details inside your issue.
