Letter from the Editor

With the height of summer upon us, I hope you can enjoy the longer daylight while we still have it and the wildlife around us. In fact, later in the evening on the middle day of this year (2nd July) I saw several roe deer on the move in the countryside; just beautiful. You’ll find plenty of information and events in your Flyer to take you through these school holiday and summer days.

Why not enjoy some homemade cakes and drinks in the grounds of St James church in Thorley, on any Sunday afternoon until the end of September? You can also visit the historic church, which dates back almost 1000 years and the Southern Country Park is easily reached, along with other walking opportunities nearby. There is also a “History Day” in September, organised by the Bishop’s Stortford History Society on its 70th anniversary, and the event will include children’s activities, talks, stands and more.

The town library is holding Henry’s Great Garden Adventure (20th August), suitable for ages 5+, children join the rangers from ZooLab for an interactive, meet and greet session with the animals. You are also invited to celebrate National Reading Group Day with the library (11th September) and why not find out what is happening at the Bishop’s Stortford Museum? Additionally, we discover that Fantastic Fridays are happening throughout August at the Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church, with crafts, games and activities for primary school-aged children and the Oasis Lounge is open for a cuppa and a chat.

Thank you to the Royal British Legion Bishop’s Stortford Branch who have told us that on Friday 15th August 2025 – the 80th Anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) – there will be a commemoration in Castle Park. You are invited to join them at the War Memorial at 10.50am. There will also be a quiz in the afternoon; more details about the quiz are in your Flyer.

Other charity and local community group news includes a reminder from Isabel Hospice that its van will be parked at Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club from 10am to 2pm on the first Monday of every month for your donations, which will be welcomed. Age Concern in Bishop’s Stortford tell us about a leased minibus that they now have, which is dedicated to transporting members of the social club. New faces are always welcome at the New Apton Centre and they offer a free trial day. There’s a report in from Rotary, about the Bishop’s Stortford Rotary Young Chef for 2025 annual competition. Ten teams from local secondary schools took part in the competition held at Birchwood High School in June and this year’s Young Chef, Ali, will now compete in the district competition. Congratulations to all involved.

As well as your local school news we have club updates. The monthly Standon Embroidery Group are inviting new members to come along and learn the art of hand embroidery. It sounds fascinating. Plus, the Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club tell us about its eight Masters swimmers at the British Masters Championships in June. There were some incredible results and the club finished in 16th position overall out of over 200 represented clubs; a fantastic achievement!

Thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy your August issue.

With best wishes
