Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine August ’24 | Free Magazine Welcome
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your August issue and hopefully the chance to enjoy picnics, walks, cycle rides and more. I’m sure my family and I will do this too and make the most of the school summer holidays, which can seem long but end up going very quickly!
As you look at your Flyer you’ll be able to plan in event diary dates and catch up on local community news. Castle Park is holding an official free opening event (Sunday 1st September), everyone is welcome. It sounds a lovely day out. Other things to do this time include free sporting activities for children (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between the 1st and 17th August at Charringtons Car Park) – book free tickets online. As well as the Summer Reading Challenge (until the 8th September), and other activities in your library, there will be free Digital Skills sessions in Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth libraries to help you make the most of your devices safely and confidently.
The Arts Society Bishop’s Stortford has an event (10th September) illustrated with pictures which sounds fascinating; visitors are welcome. Or, perhaps homemade cake and tea or coffee in the grounds of St James church in Thorley will tempt you? Available on Sunday afternoons until the end of September. The Southern Country Park is easily reached from their car park, or you can arrive from the Stort tow path, or further afield. Also, The Hundred Parishes Society has many free local walking routes nearby.
Cycle Stortford shares an update related to Active Travel (cycling and walking). They also continue to promote a network of new or signed on-road strategic active travel routes across the town. We hear from Steve, a Hertfordshire Health Walk volunteer, about why he decided to volunteer as a leader and how rewarding it is. Find out more about Cycle Stortford and Bishop’s Stortford Health Walks volunteering (with health walks in Thorley and at Castle Gardens) in your Flyer.
This month’s club and group news includes Bishop’s Stortford and District Scouts who share some of their recent activities and they have recognised the achievements of their young people and volunteers at a Gala Awards Night. The Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club is celebrating sixty five years and is still going strong; visitors are always welcome. Plus, Bishop’s Stortford Futsal have had an inter-school Futsal tournament and highlight results news. They train at Birchwood School Sports Hall; do read your magazine to learn more about these groups.
Charity updates include an urgent stock appeal campaign, ‘Donate, to feel great!’, from Isabel Hospice. They have a list of items that can be donated (www.isabelhospice.org.uk/what-to-donate) Every donation helps support the hospice’s mission of outstanding palliative care for all. Renée Friend, Isabel Hospice Ambassador, also shares local fundraising event news with us.
Ben from Bishop’s Stortford College, who is severely visually impaired, took on a sponsored swim in aid of the Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank. He was so determined and did 40 lengths. What a huge achievement and there’s still time to support Ben’s fundraising efforts.
Additionally, we have information on a dedicated phone line for anyone over 55 (for a chat and to access support) plus our regular school news. Do enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
