Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine April ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome

Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your April issue. It’s lovely to have longer daylight hours now, as well as an increasing number of spring flowers. I especially love bluebells and look forward to seeing them every year; I don’t think I’m alone in this!

As always, your Flyer is packed with local news and things to do to help make the most of this time of year. You’ll find details about Easter services and an Easter trail at the Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church. There’s also a Jigsaw Festival at the church (3rd May), raising funds for both the church and Isabel Hospice. The choice of jigsaws sounds amazing plus there are refreshments to tempt you.

We hear that the local Health Walks volunteer team has joined forces with Helping Herts, a charity that fund raises for 12 children’s charities across the county. The programme launches with a short walk (up to 45 minutes) for members of the public, staff, volunteers and service users of Grove Cottage on Tuesday 15th April from Grange Paddocks Leisure Centre. Plus, there will be free taster walks from Herts and Essex Hospital and there are other Health Walks locally, including Castle Park. The Hundred Parishes Society offers a wide choice of free self-guided walking routes, if you are interested in these too.

The RSPB Stort Valley Group shares details about its April events; new members are always welcome. Herts Libraries is celebrating 100 years, so watch out for even more going on in your local library!  What an incredible anniversary. Inspirational Gems has a Creative Workshop (26th April) for cancer patients, survivors or friend/family members. This free event includes crafts and a beauty treatment; all ages welcome.

A commemoration to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 2 in Europe – VE Day – has been organised by The Royal British Legion Bishop’s Stortford Branch (Thursday 8th May, Castle Park) plus there will be other events in town that day – what a significant time. Why not find out more about all the activities I’ve mentioned?

Club and Group news includes Bishop’s Stortford Bowling Club president Neal Harrington representing Disability Bowls England and emerging victorious. Congratulations to him and the team. The Club welcomes new members and has an open weekend. We have an article from Cycle Stortford related to The ‘Greenway’ network within the Bishop’s Stortford North development. Graham Oxborrow of Cycle Stortford says that the town desperately needs the off-road cycle path through The Meads and Grange Paddocks as championed by the Town Council. Both clubs would be pleased to hear from you if you’d like to find out more about them.

There’s news about the expanding service for children and families from the Bishop’s Stortford Contact Centre. A new Centre Coordinator is in place and the charity is looking for a new Chair, as well as volunteers to help run sessions on Saturdays. Also, several runners are taking part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon in April to raise money towards the cost of recruiting and training volunteers at Citizens Advice East Herts.  These charities would be pleased to hear from you and to receive your support. We also share your regular school news as well.

Thank you for your support and enjoy any chocolate you may have during Easter – I’m sure we will in our household.

With best wishes
