The Bishops Stortford Flyer July edition – Welcome
Are you interested to know more about the wildflowers that are out now? www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk has a useful wildflower spotter sheet as well as other resources. Selfheal is a cluster of violet flowers (I love their colour) and is just one of the many bright flowers welcoming us all into the summer.
Amongst the community news and local events in this issue there’s a great choice of things to do. You can visit, and camp out, at Daisy May’s Farm or watch an outdoor play at Hatfield Forest. The free Summer Reading Challenge 2023 at the library, for primary school aged children with their families, is on from the 8th July to the 2nd September and St James Church Thorley is open for tea and cake on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer. There are so many walks around the Thorley area (and beyond) why not look at www.hundredparishes.org.uk/walks for some lovely routes? I can personally recommend them!
The Berden Village Fete (just a few miles north of Stortford) is on Saturday 15th July, it’s full of activities, stalls, a vintage bus ride, live music and food and drink for all the family. Find out about all these things to do in your magazine!
Renée Friend, the chair of the Isabel Hospice Bishop’s Stortford Support Group, was recently presented with a long service award at a volunteers event. She has volunteered across a wide range of roles for 35 years for the charity. Over the years, it is estimated that Renée and her team of volunteers have helped to raise around £1 million for Isabel Hospice. This is so inspiring and it’s such an incredible achievement. We would also like to thank Renée for the editorial she sends to the Flyer – and to all the groups who do this. Please keep sending your community news in!
Charity News Bishops Stortford
Other charity news includes a brand new printed What’s On calendar for seniors from Kissing it Better – thanks to the efforts of over 20 organisations, all linked to the care of older people. Grove Cottage has presented Avril Brampton with its volunteer of the year 2023 award for her volunteering support and the charity has thanked all its volunteers. Holy Trinity Night Shelter and Community Outreach are looking to add to their volunteers; as well as a winter shelter they hold weekly drop-in sessions for anyone who is homeless. Also, Helping Herts founders Gordon Morrison and Jim Tatchell successfully completed a 180 mile ramble of the Hertfordshire Way, raising £35,000 for 12 children’s charities. What fantastic achievements and more volunteer support would be warmly welcomed across the board.
Local News Bishops Stortford
In local group news we’ve heard from Bishop’s Stortford 1096 Squadron Air Cadets. Two members of the committee from the Squadron Association, Nick Johnson and David Tisdale, recently abseiled down the Water Tower to raise funds for a new minibus for the Squadron. Plus, would you like to find out more about a local photography group called H2 Photographic Society? Have a read inside.
School and education news includes an 11 year old author; fundraising achievements; overseas trips; wellbeing support; creative arts; a history event; awards and water safety workshops. So, do enjoy this packed summer issue!
With best wishes
