The Bishop’s Stortford Flyer August 2023
Welcome to your August issue of The Bishops Stortford Flyer.
Inside The Bishops Stortford Flyer August edition. Amongst the community news and local events in this issue there’s a great choice of things to do. Also updates from local community groups and charities.
The Bishop’s Stortford Flyer August 2023
As I write I realise how quickly we have reached the middle of summer. With long daylight hours still here and the school holidays upon us, it seems a good opportunity to enjoy our green spaces and maybe pack a picnic? There’s an article about local parks – with a focus on Southern Country Park – inside your Flyer this month.
Summer Activities Bishop’s Stortford August
With plenty of things to do, alongside your community news, this is a full issue as usual. We hear about summer activities, including Victorian themed children’s activities and a performance of Horrible Histories (South Mill Arts – dates inside). We also find out about a special film directed by Simon Baker featuring his disabled brother Matthew (10th September) and a ‘When I Went Shopping, I Bought…’ exhibition by local resident Lucy Gray (until 26th August) also at South Mill Arts.
There are a range of family and adult only events at Henry Moore in Perry Green throughout the summer and The Hundred Parishes Society has provided an insightful overview of museums in the areas it covers; all open in the summer. Some of these museums you may not have heard of before. I’m certainly intrigued. Grove Cottage in the Park (2nd September, Sworders Field) offers family friendly live music plus entertainment, with the event supporting the charity.
Then St Elizabeth’s annual Apple Day (30th September) takes place for all the family. You could also pop into the TIC (or contact them) if you’d like more ideas of what to do!
Sports Clubs Updates August
The Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club updates us on excellent results from the Masters Championships and Cycle Stortford shares a feature about why it is campaigning (with The Flitch Way Action Group) to establish a direct cycle route linking the centre of Bishop’s Stortford to the start of the Flitch Way. We also find out about the newly opened Castle Park tennis courts, managed by the Bishop’s Stortford Lawn Tennis Club. Could be a great time to try out some open air family tennis!
Charity News Bishop’s Stortford August
Charity updates this month include an appeal from the Royal British Legion about increasing the number of Bishop’s Stortford branch members and also asking for occasional volunteers, to help ensure it can continue in its work which includes the annual Bishop’s Stortford Poppy Appeal. Isabel Hospice shares news of Herts and Soul Community Choir events, attendance at the Waterlane productions of Merry Wives of Windsor, and a golf event at Great Hadham Golf Club; all of which have contributed to significant funds being raised for the charity. There’s even a Bubble Rush event ahead (10th September) for Isabel Hospice; a 5K fun run with multi-coloured bubbles! We also find out that a pre-loved fashion show held at the Charis Centre for Helping Herts has raised over £6,000 for children’s charities. It’s incredible to read all this news.
Mayor’s News and Local Schools
Thank you very much to the Mayor, Councillor Richard Townsend, who shares his first column in the Flyer – a real whirlwind of community activity. School and education news this month includes information from the Beavers; a maths challenge; wellbeing support courses; football; a summer play (Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies!); a Quiz Club; Young Chef competition; swimming and Ofsted. Phew! I hope you can now enjoy reading your summertime Flyer at a slower pace. Thank you for your support.
With best wishes
