Felixstowe Lions Club Christmas Light Up Day 2025
From Graham Phelps – President of the Lions Club
The Lions Club of Felixstowe have maintained and erected the Felixstowe Christmas Lights since 1978. In that time there have been many changes to the displays. Perhaps the greatest change has been to incorporate LEDs producing brighter, more reliable decorations that are cheaper to run. The savings made have enabled us to add significantly to the scheme. Thanks go to Phil Weatherhogg who manages the team that undertake the maintenance. The train display at Great Eastern Square has been completely re-engineered to last another 30 years!
This year we have continued to add features, the most innovative is to run a competition for Y5 students in the town and surrounding villages to design a lamppost ‘window’. Approximately 200 designs were entered and the eventual winner was Maya Rusu from Colneis Primary School. Her design has been created and will be displayed at the triangle on the lamppost nearest Tesco. It will be illuminated at 16:00 ahead of the main switch on at 17:00 on the 29th November. We intend to run the competition every year so that by 2050 all the displays will be renewed.
Over the weekend of 15/16 November (weather permitting) you will see the Lions volunteers erecting the lights, the whole enterprise is financed mainly by the Town Council supported by businesses around the town. We would urge you to support the businesses that are advertised in this programme. You can also help by making a text donation. Just text the word LIGHTS followed by the number of pounds you would like to give to 70085. So, LIGHTS5 will donate £5, and LIGHTS10 will donate £10.

The circular stage will again be sited at Great Eastern Square. This popular feature is not only for performers in the weekends leading up to Christmas but is designed to light up after dark whenever any one steps on stage. Take the opportunity to take a selfie and post it on social media, Felixstowe is a brilliant place at Christmas – get the message out there!
The Lions Club wish the residents of Felixstowe and surrounding villages a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Putting the lights on marks the start of the festive season.
