Monthly Meeting, Ipswich Group, Suffolk Family History Society.

On Wednesday 1st May 2024

Janette Robinson presents:
Voices from the Workhouse
The story of Workhouses. It’s rare to hear what it was like to live in one. Hear Dora’s (Wickham Market) true story. Wickham Market Workhouse is still there – but today has been converted into rather nice Flats and apartments.
In earlier years – if you had mentioned Workhouses to older folk – they would often shudder and say I will never go in there.
Janette is a qualified – and a tenacious researcher, will also outline the Workhouse Story, which was often the place of last resort to many.
Do your Family History – and you will more than likely come across and ancestor in a Workhouse…. who often died there!
This talk will follow a brief and painless A.G.M.

Attached is a copy of the Poster that I have produced,

A recent picture taken of what was the Wickham Market Workhouse – the building still being used today.

A past view of the Workhouse (as used on the Poster) that reflects how much it has changed.

And a picture of one family group who spent time in the Workhouse.

Do use any of these images.
