Constable: A Cast of Characters Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich | 28 March – 14 June 2026

John Constable (1776–1837) is one of Britain’s most celebrated landscape artists, forever linked with the Suffolk and Essex countryside that inspired his work. But behind the iconic paintings lies a fascinating story of the people who shaped his life and career.
As part of the 250th anniversary of Constable’s birth, Colchester + Ipswich Museums present a major new exhibition at Christchurch Mansion. Constable: A Cast of Characters explores the family, friends, patrons and influences who helped transform Suffolk into what we now know as “Constable Country.”
Featuring over 100 works and objects, the exhibition brings together paintings, sketches, portraits and personal items from Constable and his contemporaries. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the relationships that supported him throughout his life – from early backers who recognised his talent, to the networks that sustained his career.
The exhibition space itself has been carefully designed to evoke Regency Ipswich, immersing visitors in the world Constable would have known. Period details, recreated interiors, costumes and personal artefacts help bring his story to life. Among the highlights are deeply personal items including his wife’s wedding ring, his paint box complete with tools and pigments, and a Royal Academy diploma.
While Constable is best known for his landscapes, the exhibition also reveals his early work in portraiture, undertaken out of financial necessity. These portraits offer valuable insight into his working methods and the connections that later helped establish his reputation.
Family played a central role in Constable’s life, and this is reflected throughout the exhibition. Portraits and drawings of his parents, siblings and children sit alongside more intimate works, such as Ann Constable’s Flower Garden (1815), painted after his mother’s death. Visitors will also see touching sketches of his children, created during both joyful and difficult periods of his life.
The exhibition also explores the artistic influences around him. Works by fellow Suffolk artist Thomas Gainsborough and mentor George Frost highlight the creative environment that shaped Constable’s development, while pieces by his assistant John Dunthorne Jr show his own influence on others.
Bringing the story into the present day, new sculptures by Sasha Constable, a direct descendant of the artist, will also be on display. Her work offers a contemporary response to Constable’s legacy, connecting past and present in a unique way.
Through this rich collection of works and stories, Constable: A Cast of Characters offers a fresh perspective on one of Britain’s most enduring artists – revealing not just the landscapes he painted, but the people who helped shape them.
