The Stansted Flyer Magazine September ’24 Update and Welcome
Letter from the Editor
As I write this welcome letter, I hope the summer has been going as well as possible and that we can enjoy a good start to early autumn. With a new term for those in education and many local groups now running a full programme of activities, you’ll find inspiration from the community updates in this issue, to take you through September and beyond.
If you enjoy walking and being outdoors (count me in here!) there’s a St Clare Memory Walk in Saffron Walden (22nd September) plus an Apples and Bees Day at the Gardens of Easton Lodge (15th September) – as well as open Thursdays at the Gardens.
A special Energy Efficiency Open Day (5th October, St Theresa’s Church Hall, Stansted) has been brought together by Sustainable Stansted and Community Energy South. Free of charge to attend, it sounds packed with useful information and advice for local residents with some freebies too!
Stansted September ’24 News
Other things happening include Claire’s Macmillan Coffee Morning (27th September) in Great Dunmow. Coffee, tea, cakes, a raffle and music by Mike awaits you. There are still two more Open Days this year at the Mill – in September and October – and the Dunmow Art Group will be holding its autumn Art Exhibition and Sale at St. Mary’s Church, Great Dunmow (5th and 6th October), with free entry. Also, The Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is looking for new singers (there’s an open rehearsal in September) ahead of a performance this December and ‘The Fun Place’ is on every Friday in the Free Church Hall. All ages are welcome, although particularly suitable for children. Refreshments are available. Why not find out more about these events inside?
Other club and group news includes an update from Rotary in Takeley about a collection for the Uttlesford Foodbank and their Open Gardens event. They now plan another action-packed year of events to support charity and the local community; new members are welcome. Stansted’s entry in the 2024 Anglia in Bloom competition was judged in July. The judges were really impressed with all the people they met and gave organisers positive feedback on the village entry. There’s a presentation event in September where they learn the outcome of this 2024 entry. We also hear from the u3a about the first u3a Festival and that a professional gemologist will be the speaker at their General Meeting (19th September). Sounds intriguing; new members are welcome. You can find details about these groups in your magazine.
We also share news from local charities, including Let’s Talk, Stansted! set up four years ago. They hold regular events and support activities to promote mental health awareness. They’re hosting their annual Wellbeing Festival soon (13th October, St John’s Church and Hall). Support 4 Sight highlights National Eye Health Week (23rd to 29th September). The message is to ‘get your eyes tested’ and they share top tips for healthy eyes. The charity offers a safe space to meet, share experiences and not feel ‘alone in the darkness’. Plus, Danaher Animal Home is asking if you have a space in your home for Simba, who loves a walk and a bedtime cuddle! These charities would be grateful for your support.
