The Sawbridgeworth September Flyer ’20

Sawbridgeworth Bowling Club

The club celebrated its Centenary in 2019 with a number of very special events. 2020 was going to be a great year as well. Building work started at the beginning of the year ready for the new season. Then Covid 19 struck. The work gradually stopped as supplies dried up. After a few months the work re-started and we had our new re-furbished fully accessible clubhouse. Every cloud has a silver lining. It soon became clear the full bowling programme was not going to happen in 2020. The committee took advantage of this situation and brought forward the work which was due to be undertaken during the coming winter. The work included painting the remainder of the clubhouse, renewing the ceiling and upgrading the lighting.

Sawbridgeworth Bowling Club now has a bright, fresh, fully accessible clubhouse, new modern toilets including a disabled one and a modern style bar. On August 1st members were able to participate in their first internal match, Ladies Captain v Men’s Captain (the ladies won!)

Social distancing procedures were all in place (including a socially distanced group photo). Access to the bar was carefully signposted with sanitisers available at the entrances and a one way system in operation. An enjoyable afternoon was had by one and all. Other members came along to watch the match and view the completed work. Burgers and hot dogs were on sale during the match and enjoyed by many.

SBC would like to thank Sport England, Stansted Airport Community Trust, Hertfordshire Locality Budget , The OL Trust, East Herts Community Grant, Sawbridgeworth Town Council and Members of Sawbridgeworth Bowling Club for grants given towards the cost of the build as well as Bowls England and Members of the Club for loans. Thanks is also given to members of the club and Sawbridgeworth Sports Association for their support. The building work was undertaken by Cooper and Wells Construction Ltd. of Sawbridgeworth.

Members will enjoy the new facilities, however the clubhouse is also open for members of the community to use for small group meetings and other activities.
