The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine March’24
Welcome Letter from the Editor
As I write this month’s letter there is the welcome prospect of the clocks going forward on the 31st March (which also coincides with Easter Sunday) So, I hope you can enjoy the longer daylight hours and also some chocolate, if you like it!
Sawbridgeworth Flyer March Things To Do
In our March issue you’ll find plenty of community information, things to do and local news as we move into early spring. Chris Hunt shares ideas in his Clerk’s Corner, including the allotment sites, the Hailey Centre, visiting Great St. Mary’s Church (read more from Father Simon in this month’s ‘Church and Town’) and enjoying Pishiobury Park (read about a recent meeting when Bob Reed spoke on the history of Pishiobury Park for the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society).
Are you an aspiring young songwriter keen to showcase your talent? Then why not find out about the first ever Stortford Young Songwriters Competition, open for entries from young people in years 3 to 13 living or attending school in Sawbridgeworth, Bishop’s Stortford, Stansted Mountfitchet and nearby. We also hear from the Memorial Hall about a range of events coming up there and they ask us to put the Sawbridgeworth May Fayre (Sunday 5th May), in our diary. If you are able to offer any help for this event they would be pleased to hear from you. Additionally, we’re invited to join the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Liz Green when she visits Sawbridgeworth Community Library on Thursday 28th March. Why not call in, you are sure of a warm welcome and there are many things to find out and do in your library.
Sawbridgeworth Flyer Groups
Updates from local groups include the Sawbridgeworth WI who tell us that Ken McDonald (The Hundred Parishes Society) spoke at a recent meeting. He explained about the area and the walks on their website with descriptions to match the landscape: www.hundredparishes.org.uk
Dawn and Victoria from Sustainable Sawbridgeworth recently organised the first event by Sawbo Sales, which was a great success. Their mission is to encourage reuse of items, reduce carbon emissions from deliveries, to bring the community together and of course have some fun in the process. Plus, Sustainable Sawbridgeworth will be running a cycling stall at Sawbridgeworth’s Co-op (Saturday 13th April) which will include showcasing local routes for those looking to cycle more.
The Homes for Ukraine Support Group highlights an award and marks the two year anniversary: “My family and I are very grateful to the local community for their kindness and open hearts. Life here is peaceful and calm, but we, like thousands of Ukrainians throughout the UK, cannot forget and remain silent about the war in Ukraine” With moving stories, incredible achievements and useful updates; why not find out more about these groups in your Flyer?
Sawbridgeworth Flyer Charity News
In charity news The Bishop’s Stortford Child Contact Centre has been awarded funding to offer sessions at Bullfields Centre in Sawbridgeworth on two Thursday afternoons a month and Jane’s new quiz – ‘About Time’ – is available to buy in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust (closing date for the quiz is the 24th May 2024). You can read all the details about these stories in your magazine! This is in addition to the usual school news that we share each month.
Thank you for your support of the Flyer and do enjoy this springtime issue.
With best wishes
