The Sawbridgeworth Flyer Magazine June ’24
Welcome Letter from the Editor
I hope you can appreciate the great outdoors as much as possible this month and perhaps take part in ‘30 Days Wild’ organised by the Wildlife Trusts – it’s free and good fun for all ages! June is such a lovely time of year.
As usual we have a lot of community events and information to share. The Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall Trust has sent in a report about the May Fayre, and I hope if you were there, you enjoyed it. I was able to meet up with some community groups and the whole town was packed! We also have details of summer and autumn events at the Memorial Hall for you.
Sawbridgeworth Local History Society
During this 80th anniversary of D-Day month, the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society will lay a wreath at the Town War Memorial in Great St Mary’s Churchyard and then later in June they will have a return visit from Mark Smith, medals expert on The Antiques Roadshow, and his talk will be “Operation Deadstick” (27th June). The Great St Mary’s Flower Festival is coming up (27th and 28th July) with flower arrangements on the theme of children’s books, refreshments and other activities.
Sawbridgeworth Autumn Show
Plus, we’re being encouraged to enter the Sawbridgeworth Autumn Show; you can ask for the show schedule right now! (the event will take place on the 31st August).
In addition, Sawbridgeworth library always has a variety of things to do and you may like to enjoy a picnic at Pishiobury Park (thank you Chris for the picnic mention in your Clerk’s Corner). Also, there’s the Bishop’s Stortford Carnival Parade and Fun Day (15th June). Why not look in your issue for details about all these events?
We are pleased to share an article from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service about Simon Lincoln, after his 20 years at Sawbridgeworth Fire Station. Simon joined as a retained firefighter in 2004 (then after joining full-time was stationed at Hertford, then Hemel Hempstead and St Albans, while still being in the retained crew in Sawbridgeworth) He became crew commander and then watch commander at Sawbridgeworth station. Simon’s colleagues recently gave him a send-off on his last day at Sawbridgeworth.
Sawbridgeworth WI
Group news this time includes a report from Sawbridgeworth WI on their 60th birthday celebrations! They also tell us about past and future speakers; sounds very interesting. Sustainable Sawbridgeworth’s Cycle Group update us on a recent Cycle Day event and are encouraging people to cycle locally. We also hear from The East Herts Woodturning Association, who meet in Sawbridgeworth. They provide members with opportunities to improve their skills; new members are always welcome whatever their ability. These groups would all be pleased to hear from you.
The Sawbridgeworth Bereavement Café has recently celebrated its two year anniversary and is open twice a month on Tuesdays (details inside). Plus the Sawbridgeworth Repair Café is also about to celebrate its second anniversary and the next two dates are the 20th July and the 28th September (there’s now a Bishop’s Stortford Repair Café as well). Find out more about these Sawbridgeworth Cafés and the support they offer inside your magazine.
We would also like to thank Cllr Ruth Buckmaster for her monthly Mayoral reports and for her final one this time. At the end of a very busy year she says: ‘It has been a huge honour to carry out this role’.
Thank you for your support and enjoy your June Flyer.
With best wishes
