Welcome Letter from the Editor
Letter from the Editor
As I write we are moving into the middle of summer; let’s hope we get the weather to be able to enjoy the great outdoors as much as we’d like to and are able to. There is so much to experience, from the many brightly coloured flowers, to butterflies and dragonflies, to the early birdsong!
Amongst this month’s community news and events we are reminded about the Great St Mary’s Flower Festival on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July, with free entry and something for everyone to enjoy. We also hear from the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall about their future events, which include The Peter Rudeforth Band playing traditional Jazz on Friday 19th July; A tribute to Aretha Franklin on Friday 16th August and a Whitney Celebration on Friday 20th September (plus there are many more events). There is also a heads up about Fun on the Field and the Sawbridgeworth Autumn Show (both on Saturday 31st August).
The next talk from the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society is about The Barlow Family, local Doulton artists, on Thursday 25th July (visitors welcome) and this year’s Summer Reading Challenge – the Marvellous Makers – starts on Saturday 6th July. So, why not join this challenge at the Sawbridgeworth Library? Plus, at this time of year you may be interested in exploring green spaces and perhaps visiting Pishiobury Park and other local parks. You can find out more about all these events and activities inside your magazine.
Charity updates include news from last year’s Manor of Grove Golf Club captains, John and Trisha, about a cheque presentation to Isabel Hospice for £4,450, raised during their captain’s year 2023/2024, from various events. They said: “We were honoured to choose Isabel Hospice for our year of fundraising, and delighted with the amount raised.” In addition, local resident Jane updates us on her 2024 quiz, which has raised £2,690 (bringing the total raised since 2013 to just under £16,000) to support Teenage Cancer Trust. Look out for her next quiz in 2025! What incredibly inspiring results.
The new Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, Cllr Reece Smith, introduces himself to us in his first column and looks forward to sharing monthly updates. He says: “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve our wonderful community.”
Local club and group news includes an update from Sustainable Sawbridgeworth’s Cycle Group, who recently joined up with The Central Coop to promote cycling in and around the Sawbridgeworth area at a special Cycle Day event. We also hear from the Sawbridgeworth Town Twinning Association about some of their recent and forthcoming activities and their 50th Anniversary Sawbridgeworth photobook. Additionally, the Sawbridgeworth WI reviewed their past year’s activities during their Annual Meeting and the president thanked all the members.
We are pleased to share a report from David Royle about Theo van de Bilt, founder member of the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society, former Chairman, member, writer, and researcher, who has recently received a well-deserved award at the Hertfordshire Association of Local History AGM for services to local history.
There’s also school news to catch up with in this issue, and to find out more about anything that I’ve included in this letter, do look inside your magazine.
We hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
