We’re Going Up Again
Saturday 4th May 2024. A momentous day, one some thought they’d never see again and one others had always longed to witness.
The weather man clearly had the power of foreshadowing when he painted the skies blue and popped the sunshine cherry on top making the smell of promotion that little bit sweeter. Could they do it? After 22 years since the boys sat on top, years of waiting, wishing, admitting defeat but picking up the pace once more. Who knew one sunny Saturday in 2024 could make dreams come true.
Dreams of young. Dreams of old. Dreams of players who got told they’d never get there, they’re not David Beckham and should probably pick another career quicker than they can take a free kick when they’re 2-1 down. The tears and heartache never felt more worth while.
A similar joyous Saturday, 29th April 2023 to be exact, Ipswich Town were promoted to the Championship with 98 points to their name. Never did people believe greater joy would be upon them one year later. (Super) Kieran McKenna, consistently humble, diligent and always well measured; his record since he arrived in December 2021 is nothing short of astonishing. With 93 points secured and one game to go; one point was all they needed to seal back to back promotions.
A quick tap of Sir Bobby Robson’s leg on the way into the ground, thousands of blue and white fans gathered to create an atmosphere that Portman Road felt proud to hold. A sense of unity, all as one championing their team. A hazy view from the flares and a chorus of chants; one point felt close to touch but enough in distance for the boys to maintain unwavering concentration until the final whistle.
Anxiously waiting but never in doubt. Waiting to jump up, punch the air and grab the limbs of the person next to them in celebration. Wes Burns secured the first in the 27th minute and the crowds in all four stands went wild. It was in sight and even more so in the second half when Hutchinson scored their second goal. The goal that settled the nerves but started the party… and made everyone want to dance with Omari.
90 minutes was over. The added three was all that remained. Minutes away from a life changing moment. A time where even the doubters would be forced to believe. It wouldn’t be long before the soles of fan’s feet which once tread in misery would touch the ground of glory.
The whistle blew. Ipswich Town were Premier League bound.
Tears of relief, pride and surrealness falling from the eyes of tractor boys, whilst fans held them on their shoulders, cheering their names in pure admiration. How proud would their 5 year old selves be.
