The Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine May ’24

Inside the Hertford and Ware Flyer magazine May ’24 edition. There’s a great choice of things to do in this issue, alongside your community news.

Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine May ’24 Welcome

Letter from the Editor

It’s such a nice thought that, as I welcome you to our May issue, we’ll be experiencing ever lengthening daylight for the next two months. We hope you’ll feel inspired and informed after you’ve read your magazine and can make the most of this time of year.

Do you have an appreciation of flowers and plants? The Ware in Bloom Team would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in watering, volunteering or sponsoring. I always think the flowers look lovely around the town each year. Ware Priory Lido is due to turn the heating on for the main summer season from the 6th May and they’re holding public consultations on the refurbishment of the Lido building. The Herts Book Festival is back (Saturday 18th May – Hertford Castle; Sunday 19th May – Southern Maltings) and all events will be free, but most will require a pre-booked ticket.

Events to Attend

The next Quiz Night at Ware Library is on Wednesday 19th June and Hertford library report on a collaboration with Artist in Residence Laura Cordery, who will be hosting workshops in and around Hertford in May and June.  Both Hertford (100 Years of Hertford North Station) and Ware (90th anniversary of the opening of Ware’s open air swimming pool) Museums have exhibitions and events. Hertford Theatre Week (27th May – 1st June) is at the Ayckbourn Theatre, Haileybury College campus – with a different play each night!

In club news, Hertford Rotary explain that Rotary Clubs have planted purple crocuses in their local areas, to raise awareness of the ongoing worldwide campaign to eradicate polio. They would be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to know more about what they do. We also find out that £1,000 was raised for Diabetes UK at a memorial dance in Hertingfordbury to remember James Wyatt. The event was hosted by Waggoners Square Dance Club (the group’s next “taster” Hoedown is Monday 17th June).

The Willow Charity Shop in Herford is now just over a year old, it’s the only UK charity dedicated to helping seriously ill 16-40-year-olds with tailored Special Days and Special Treats to look forward to. We have a heartfelt Q & A article from volunteer Karen this month. Isabel Hospice has ‘Tonnes of Care’ regular donation days, which include Van Hage and Wodson Park and they are holding a Celebration of Life event (Ware Priory Gardens, 9th June). Both charities would be delighted to hear from you.

Hertford and Ware Community News

I attended the recent Sele Community Day, focused on informing local residents about the importance of staying active and moving more. Thank you to Viktoria (Active in the Community CIC) for this event report. We also share news from Sustainable Hertford Heath about their pre-loved clothing events (all proceeds go back into the village) and other future events.

I Love Hertford May Update

Dan from I Love Hertford updates us on Hertford news including the first Shop Local Saturday event! We also hear about the Mayor of Hertford Community awards (five winners across four categories) and receive a review of the past year from the Mayor of Ware, Cllr Thomas Day, thank you. He says: “Serving as Mayor of Ware has been the greatest of honours…”

We hope you enjoy your May issue (which also includes the regular school updates) and thank you for your support of the Flyer.

With best wishes
