Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your July issue. It’s full of local events and community information to help you make the most of the summer!
Thank you to Hertford Town Council and Dan from I Love Hertford for details about Hertford events. These include the Hertford Castle Beer and World Food Festival, Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Hertford Castle tours, a Children’s Summer Trail and Rock at the Castle. Ware Town Council events include the Ware Festival (on during July) with the Carnival Parade and Town Fair at the start and other events such as the Riverside Real Ale Festival, the Annual Food Festival, Old Town Live and Ware Town Fringe. All these Hertford and Ware events are inside your magazine.
In addition, we have the Hertford Heath Summer Fayre (18th July); an organ festival at St Mary’s Church in Ware; Sunday afternoon teas at St John the Baptist Church in Great Amwell; the Ware Choral Society’s summer concert (18th July); the Ware in Bloom Open Garden (26th July) and a NGS Open Garden in Bengeo (9th August).
Hertford and Ware libraries remind us about this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. This theme is Read to the Beat! Children can read six books, or complete six library and book themed challenges to win a certificate and a medal. Pop into the library to pick up a free pack. There are also other events happening at both libraries. Hertford Museum has a late opening (14th July, 5pm-8pm) when you can visit their new exhibition – Song of the Sea – and enjoy a drink in their garden. Plus, the Hertford Museum Beer Festival Microfest (25th July). Free entry to both.
In local club and charity news we hear about charities that the Soroptimist International of Hertford and District Club supported in the past year: Isabel Hospice, The Living Room, Safer Places, Carers in Hertfordshire, Lend With Care and WaterAid. An event in March enabled the Club to send £900 to WaterAid. We also have an update from the Rotary Club of Hertford about their charity donations in the past year and their recent Camel Race Night which generated £1,000 for Isabel Hospice. Both these clubs would be pleased to welcome new members.
Renée from Isabel Hospice tells us volunteers served refreshments at a recent NGS Open Garden in Bengeo and raised £1,000 for the charity. “We do rely on the support of our local communities to enable us to continue to provide free care and support to patients and their families both locally and throughout all of East Hertfordshire.” The charity is now running its annual ‘Donate to Feel Great campaign’, which encourages us to turn our summer clear-outs into vital support for local hospice care. Ware FC tell us they are now recruiting for its youth sides, from ages six to 18: https://warefc.co.uk Plus 9th Ware Brownies are looking for volunteers to help lead and support their Brownie unit.
