Inside the Hertford and Ware Flyer magazine July ’24 edition. There’s a great choice of things to do in this issue, alongside your community news.
Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine July ’24 Welcome
Letter from the Editor
As I write we are moving into the middle of summer; let’s hope we get the weather to enjoy the great outdoors as much as we’d like to and are able to. There is so much to experience, from the many brightly coloured flowers, to butterflies and dragonflies, to the early birdsong!
Hertford and Ware July News and Events
Amongst this month’s community news and events, we hear about free walks from Hertfordshire Health Walks on Wednesday evenings (Panshanger in July; Hartham Common in August) and daytime walks. We also have an article about Scott’s Grotto; such a hidden gem in Ware. I really enjoyed a recent family visit there. Plus, the RSPB SE Herts Group shares its outdoor July events – a reserve visit and a surprise local walk (sounds intriguing!) New members are welcome.
Hertford and Ware Summer Holidays
With the summer school holidays ahead there are free events for children of all ages at Ware Priory (selected dates from 30th July to 27th August) plus the Summer Reading Challenge at our town libraries starts from the 6th July until the end of the holidays. There are plenty of other reasons to visit the libraries too, with their many activities and resources.
The Herford Heath Summer Fayre is on the 20th July – a great way to celebrate the end of term – plus there’s live music at the Goat pub that evening. We also hear from both town museums. There’s an exhibition ‘On The Sauce: Life and Death in Hertford’s Pubs’ and The Great British Beer Festival (27th July) at Hertford Museum and an exhibition ‘Our Local Detectorists’ (metal detecting in and around Ware), children’s activities, ‘Our Local Detectorists’ talk (30th July) and Ware Town Tours at Ware Museum. You can read about all these events, and more, inside!
Hertford and Ware Charity Updates
Charity updates include Citizens Advice East Herts “Going the Extra Mile”, with staff and volunteers hoping to walk over 200 miles around East Herts on the 21st July. They are asking for support through donations, with all money raised going towards running their free advice service. The Rotary Club of Hertford Shires has announced that £6,000 was raised during an evening fundraiser in Ware Drill Hall. This money will be distributed between Isabel Hospice and five other local charities supported by Rotary.
We hear from Caudwell Youth, who mentor at-risk young people aged 11-24. They’re currently in need of mentors in the Hertford area (if you’re over 18 years old and can spare an hour or two a week). In addition, the Hearts for Herts charity has installed the first 24/7 public access defibrillator and bleed control kit in Hertford outside the Isabel Hospice Charity Shop. Discover more about these charities in your Flyer; they would be pleased to hear from you.
Local group news includes a report from Ware u3a and an article from Stanstead Abbotts Brownies (they both have so much going on!) Plus Green Arrow, a cycling club based at The Sele School, shares an update and lets us know about a local Grass Track Racing spectator event (4th August). We have plenty of school news in this issue for you to catch up with too and thank you to Dan from I Love Hertford for his summer update.
We hope you enjoy your magazine and thank you for your support.
With best wishes
