Letter from the Editor The Hertford and Ware Flyer June
Are you interested to know more about the wildflowers that are out now? www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk has a useful wildflower spotter sheet as well as other resources. Selfheal is a cluster of violet flowers (I love their colour) and is just one of the many bright flowers welcoming us all into the summer.
Events in Hertford and Ware
Amongst the community news and local events in this issue there’s a great choice of things to do. You can now visit the newly reopened Ware Lido (just book your session online in advance) – it looks great! The free Summer Reading Challenge 2023 at the libraries is on from the 8th July to the 2nd September plus there’s an opportunity to see a live showing of Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Detective Dog’ at Hertford library (2nd August).
Both town museums have summer holiday children’s activities coming up and Ware museum is also inviting groups to apply to fill its temporary exhibition gallery for a three month period. There’s a food themed walk in Hertford (tickets via the Town and Tourist Information Centre) and you can enjoy tea and cakes and explore St Leonard’s church in Hertford on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer.
Hertford and Ware Summer 2023
The Hertford Heath annual summer fayre – followed by live evening music on the big stage – is on Saturday 15th July and the RSPB SE Herts Group has two local walks (day and evening) in July, with new members very welcome. Plus Ware Drill Hall shares an event update and lets us know that Hertford Badminton Club meets there on Monday evenings.
We also have summer event updates from both town councils with a huge choice of events ahead, including Rock at the Priory (30th July) and Rock at the Castle (6th August); Open Air Cinema (Hertford Castle – 18th August); Ware in Bloom Open Garden (23rd July); school holiday family, children and young people (up to age 17) activities on various dates and much more! Well worth finding out all the details inside; there is something for everyone.
If you like walking there’s a range of volunteer guided Hertfordshire Health Walks (including evenings and weekends) available to you and www.hundredparishes.org.uk/walks has some lovely self-guided walking routes. I can personally recommend both of these.
Charity News Hertford and Ware
In charity news Hertford based Future Living tells us about the launch of its newly refurbished bakery, 43 Bakery. All profits go towards the charity, which supports victims of domestic abuse. The bakery is adjacent to the charity’s main building at Vale House. You may be tempted to try the handmade bread, pastries, pizza and drinks on their terrace! We also have an appeal from Isabel Hospice, to raise money to buy essential equipment. They are calling on the local community to help them so they can give the best possible care to all their patients. Plus would you be able to volunteer at RSPB Rye Meads? The charity is looking for help at this reserve. The details about all these charities are in your Flyer, they would love to hear from you.
There are reports from the new town Mayors, with information on the charities they are each supporting for 2023/24. Dan at ‘I Love Hertford’ focuses on the town’s independent retailers and we have lots of school, club and group news. Thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy your packed summer issue!
With best wishes
