The Hertford and Ware August Flyer Welcome

As I write I realise how quickly we have reached the middle of summer. With long daylight hours still here and the school holidays upon us, it seems a good time to enjoy our green spaces and riverside locations and maybe pack a picnic?

Community News August

There’s a great choice of things to do in this issue, alongside your community news. Both Town Councils are running summer events, including free activities for children and teenagers during the school holidays and free summer concerts, all at Ware Priory, plus the free Rock at the Castle music festival in Hertford, supporting The Hertford Pantry Charity. Open-Air Cinema screenings of Sing 2 and Top Gun: Maverick (18th August); Tea and a Tour of the Castle with the Mayor (20th August) and Art Exhibitions to enter and view (17th and 20th August) are all taking place too.

Have you ever visited Scott’s Grotto in Ware? I can say first hand that it’s a real gem to discover, or to re-discover, on a Saturday afternoon (to 30th September) or Bank Holiday Monday. St John the Baptist Church, in Great Amwell, is open every Sunday afternoon during August for refreshments. The church has links to the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire.”

Summer Reading Challenge

Both town libraries have the free Summer Reading Challenge in full swing, for primary aged children and their families, so why not call in? There are many other things to do in your library too! Plus, the town museums are running hands-on activities for children; Wednesdays at Ware and Tuesdays to Thursdays at Hertford.

There are also Nocturnal Creatures to discover at Ware Museum (as well as an information point with things to do and copies of this magazine) and the opportunity to ‘Go Wild’ at Hertford Museum!

 Hundred Parishes Society August

The Hundred Parishes Society shares a lovely feature on museums in its Parishes; there are so many and they are open at this time of year (but worth checking individual times). There are currently evening Hertfordshire Health Walks in August (alongside daytime health walks). All walks are free and led by fully trained volunteer leaders. Plus the Fayre-ly Big Picnic, organised by Sustainable Hertford Heath, takes place on the Village Green (2nd September). Don’t forget your picnic!

Additionally, there’s an Open Day coming up at Hartham Leisure Centre (9th September) plus a report on the Ware Carnival; it was very well attended.  There is so much going on in our area!

Club News Hertford and Ware August

Club news includes reports from Ware Bowling Club; Hertford Castle Bowling Club and Inner Wheel Club Hertford – new members welcome at all.  The Hertford Heath Badminton Club would also be pleased to welcome new members; do take a look inside to find out more.

Charity News August

In a charity update, we’ve heard that donations from the Haileybury Madrigal Singers concert (at Amwell Pool) have raised £655 for Isabel Hospice. The charity now has a Bubble Rush (10th September) event – a 5k run through multi-coloured foam! Registrations are open if you’d like to join in and support Isabel Hospice.

School and Education News

Our school and education news is brimming with end of term plays; sports competitions; trips; awards; workshops and fundraising. There’s also another packed I Love Hertford column from Dan. I hope you can enjoy catching up on all this – and more – in your summertime Flyer. Thank you for your support.

With best wishes
