Felixstowe Book Festival is this month!!
The hugely popular Felixstowe Book Festival comes around again this month with events for young and old, from the 16th – 25th June, featuring so many popular, award-winning authors including BBC Radio 4’s Robin Ince, and not forgetting festival Patrons Esther Freud and Terry Waite. Meet them all in person at the stunning Harvest House on Cobbold Road in Felixstowe, Felixstowe Library and also the Two Sisters Arts Centre in Trimley St Mary. It begins with events for children and young people’s festival from the 16th June and then features a plethora of award-winning authors and some local Suffolk authors too which the grown ups will enjoy.
The delightful children’s author Mark Lowery will be at Felixstowe Library, (3pm on Saturday 17th June) whose Doughnuts Chips and Writing Tips session promises to rock your socks. You can also chat to James Campbell and Rob Jones authors of Teaching Pets to Play Football (Sunday 18th June from 10.30am) – both events are at Felixstowe Library.
At the same venue, this month, on Friday 16th June (and Saturday 17th at 1pm) there are free Step into a Story sessions with James Franklin (10am), a local actor and storyteller for a fun and exciting interactive storytelling session. With promises of puppets, props, songs and silliness, with plenty of movement and some magic too!
Tickets are selling well for Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam who are back for a new doggy/baking adventure (10am Sunday 18th) with Tracey Corderoy and Steven Lenton, both big names in children’s books (suitable for ages 3+)
Lily Graham: The Last Restaurant in Paris will be visiting Felixstowe Library, as part of the festival, on Wednesday 21st June at 7pm.
It’s not all books, Martin Newell and the Hosepipe Band entertain on the evening of Friday 23rd at the Two Sisters Arts Centre.
On Saturday 24th it’s your chance to hear from Suffolk author Darren Bruce – a retired Detective Sergeant with Suffolk and Essex Police, talking about his debut novel chillingly entitled The Skinned Man (2pm). Other local authors include Deb Blunt and Peter Berr. Together they will be discussing their book Slow Puncture – living well with dementia (10.30am). Jean Mcpherson is bringing her fascinating book all about the 70th anniversary of the terrible Felixstowe Floods 1953: Never to be Forgotten (12noon.) You can catch up with these authors and more at the Two Sisters Arts Centre in Trimley St Mary which is also playing host, on the Sunday, to a special Orwell Writers Cosy Crime Workshop from 10am.
The festival rounds off with another packed day of talks on Sunday 25th at Harvest House beginning with author Stephanie Butland: Found in a Bookshop. She is joined by acclaimed crime novelist, journalist, co-founder of the Killer Women crime authors collective and Fellow of The Royal Literary Fund, Louise Millar. Together they discuss the joy and magic of reading.
Senta Rich: Hotel 21 and Laura Kay: Wild Things are two very current authors – don’t miss your chance to meet them and hear about their latest books on Sunday from 11.30am also at Harvest House. 3pm on Sunday friend and biographer, Ian Collins, and Suffolk-born author Nicola Upson will look back on a remarkable life and celebrate The Suffolk Life of Ronald Blythe discussing his unique and lasting legacy.
The Felixstowe Book Festival is completed by playwright and screen writer Peppy Barlow on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm). Peppy lives her life looking for meaning and material in all her experiences. Her latest book is Invisible on Thursdays: A memoir of a creative woman’s travels in Greece and a look into her family’s history.
