Mayor’s update – The Felixstowe Flyer July ’24 | Flyer Magazines
It is a great honour to have been elected Mayor at the Town Council meeting on 15th May 2024. To be made Mayor of the Town you have called home all of your adult life is very special and I am looking forward to an exciting year ahead. This year is particularly special, as it marks the 50th Anniversary of Felixstowe’s Town Twinning with Wesel.
Felixstowe Mayor 2024 /25
The theme for my year is service. We have so many people and organisations in our Town who serve others and it is what makes Felixstowe such a caring and fantastic community. Many of these people are volunteers making personal sacrifice to serve and help others. During my year I would like to meet as many people and organisations who serve our Town and thank you for what you do, so do contact me to arrange a visit.
This brings me nicely on to my charities for the forthcoming year. I have chosen Breast Friends CIC and the Landguard Trust. Breast Friends support a community of breast cancer patients from diagnosis , during treatment, surgery and beyond. The Landguard Trust preserve the very special area of the Landguard Nature Reserve, the Fort and the Felixstowe Museum.
Felixstowe Events
We will be having a number of fundraising events for the charities during the year. These will include a Fashion Show, Bargain Hunt, Cheese and Wine at the Fort, Boogie Bingo and Curry Night. Please follow the ‘Mayor of Felixstowe’ Facebook page for future updates.
Since the beginning of my tenure, I have already been busy attending events including the service of reflection for D-Day at the War Memorial on 6 June and the light of the beacon. Looking out to sea and reflecting on the sacrifice of those who gave their lives prompts you to be thankful for the peace we have in our country, whilst also reflecting on the numerous places around the world where wars and conflicts are ongoing. I was also delighted to attend the opening of Pride Festival in Suffolk and to raise the Progress Pride flag in the Town Hall Gardens. Felixstowe is a welcoming and inclusive town that welcomes all people for who they are, and the flying of the flag is our symbol of support of the LGBTQIA+ community. It was also great to celebrate the 50th year of Old Felixstowe Community Centre at their Summer Fair. Congratulations to all who have put so much work into what is an excellent community facility! On that same day, I also opened Little Dreams Café, in Orwell Road. It is well worth a visit and I recommend the delicious Rolo flapjack.
I was delighted to celebrate the awarding of the Blue Flag and Seaside Award to Felixstowe for the fifth consecutive year. This coveted Award is a testament to the quality the bathing water and beaches in Felixstowe. As residents and visitors enjoy the town over the coming summer months, I hope they will also feel proud to see the Blue Flag and Seaside Award flying in the background.
