Letter from the Editor
As I write your October issue welcome letter I hope we can all enjoy the autumn colours and that half term goes well for everyone it’s relevant to. Plus, don’t forget our clocks go back on Sunday 25th October!
Your autumn events and community news include a wide range of activities taking place at Bishop’s Stortford library, for all ages. Such as Notorious Witches of Hertfordshire (14+); Get Online Week; a Library Quiz Night; Superwolf Storytime with author Helen Docherty; Green Libraries Week (Thermal Image Camera launch and Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust information stall) and a Gruffalo Trail over half term! It’s the final Open Day of the season at the Gardens of Easton Lodge on the 18th October, with Halloween decorations around the Gardens, the trail and family games. Plus, Rock Choir will sing at this event from 12pm. The Gardens are also open on Thursdays to the end of October.
Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia has confirmed its next event – America 250: A Musical Journey Across America. Why not come and discover orchestral music — with under-18s free (11th October). There is also a free Energy Saving Workshop to help you find ways to reduce your household energy bills (Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, 19th November). Booking is essential.
Renée from Isabel Hospice tells us about the recent Nags Head Charity Quiz Night in support of the Hospice, with around 100 people attending. Thanks to generous support in the region of £250.00 was raised which could fund one Nurse’s night shift, operate the charity’s 24 hour advice line and care for the patients at the inpatient unit, providing a lifeline to those both at home and at the unit.
We also have news from clubs and groups including the Bishop’s Stortford and District Footpaths Association. They tell us they warmly welcome the news that Bishop’s Stortford Town Council has recently submitted a planning application for the creation of a new walking, wheeling and cycling route in Bishop’s Stortford. The proposed ‘north’ route will provide a safe off road link connecting the new northern housing developments, Grange Paddocks, Castle Park and the town centre. Also, Hertfordshire Health Walks, which have a number of local volunteer-led free walks in Bishop’s Stortford and nearby, are looking for people to join their volunteer teams. Plus, H2 Photographic Society tell us they are a mix of friendly, enthusiastic photographers of all levels, always keen to welcome new members of any ability. They meet every Thursday, alternating between Much Hadham Village Hall and on Zoom.
The Arts Society of Bishop’s Stortford, in its 50th year, highlights its next meeting (13th October) at which Margaret Watson will talk about “Life on a Harp String” – the history, design and music of this unique instrument which boasts over 1,400 working parts. It takes place at South Mill Arts. Plus, RSPB Stort Valley tells us about its October meetings and a walk. The walk, which is on the 20th October, starts from Saint Mary’s Church in Standon. All these groups would be very pleased to hear from you and tell you more about them.
You will also find your regular school news inside your magazine. Thank you very much for your support and for sending in community contributions to us. We hope you enjoy your October Flyer.
With best wishes
