Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your March Flyer. As we move gradually into early spring and then Easter time (which is early this year), it’s lovely to see more flowers appearing and to know our clocks change to British Summer Time on Sunday 29th March!

Community updates and event information this month include the opportunity to try orienteering in Southern Country Park. There are three trails to choose from, suitable for all ages, fitness levels and experience. It sounds really interesting and it’s all free! Plus, why not find out more about the volunteer led Hertfordshire Health Walks taking place across a number of locations in Bishop’s Stortford and beyond – they’re free, friendly, sociable walks.

Bishop’s Stortford library is holding an event (25th March) as a finale to the centenary celebrations at Hertfordshire Libraries. Three crime authors will be discussing ‘Unreliable Narrators’, so why not pop in to find out more? Further details are also in your magazine.

In updates from charities and local groups, the Thirst Youth Café in Bishop’s Stortford tells us they’ve created a safe, welcoming space where young people feel supported, valued, and free to be themselves. Their dedicated team provides guidance and support through difficult times, helping young people overcome isolation, build resilience, and find their place in the world. You can discover more about them in your magazine. We also hear from Smartphone Free Childhood Stortford, a local group that has been building momentum amongst parents for over two years. They would be pleased to hear from you if you’d like to discover more about them: sfcstortford@outlook.com

We have news from the Herts and Essex Flower Club, with congratulations to Pat who was recently presented with her 50 year member badge; what a great achievement! Also, the Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club tells us they finished in fifth position in the 2025’s National Arena Swimming League and will stay up in the Premier Division for 2026’s League. An excellent result.

The Bishop’s Stortford u3a highlights that they have over 50 groups to choose from, with no age restrictions, just that you are not in full-time employment. Bishop’s Stortford WI members recently heard the President of Isabel Hospice, Barbara Doherty MBE, talk about how the modern hospice movement has emerged from its medieval roots, perfecting palliative care for patients and support for their families. In addition, Renée at Isabel Hospice updates us on recent fundraising news and thanks the local community for its ongoing support. New members are welcome at all these groups.

Thank you to the new Apton Centre for a reminder of all the activities and food they provide to the over 55’s. It’s a welcoming community hub and they would love to tell you more! Additionally, we’ve also received a beautiful tribute article from Megan, in loving memory of her 18-month-old daughter Lucie who sadly passed away last summer due to mitochondrial disease. Lucie the Ladybird is written in memory of Lucie – with her spirit, bravery, and sparkle living on in these books. A donation of 50p from every copy sold is donated to The Sick Children’s Trust, who supported Lucie and her parents during their hospital stays. Thank you very much to Megan for this.

Plus, we have school news for you. We hope you enjoy your magazine and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
