Bishops Stortford Community News
Welcome to your New Year Flyer. The community news inside will provide useful ideas and inspiration to take us through January and beyond. Maybe you’ll be able to spend some time outside this month, suitably wrapped up, to blow some cobwebs away! (there are free Hertfordshire Health Walks to join, plus many self-guided walking routes here: www.hundredparishes.org.uk/walks)
Keeping to an outside theme, Isabel Hospice (IH) shares the results of recent fundraising events and also tells us about ‘Step Up For Isabel’, a walking challenge (or cycling, jogging or wheeling) to keep active and support local hospice care. Can you commit to walking 100 miles in one month? This is about 8000 steps a day, which is how may steps an IH nurse walks per shift. We also hear from the RSPB Stort Valley Group about a visit (Lee Valley) and a walk (from Sawbridgeworth) in January; new members are always welcome.
Bishops Stortford January 2024
The Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club has sent in a wonderful tribute about their friend and club stalwart Squin Clarke, who was a part of the rugby club for well over 60 years, including playing for them. “He will be missed by us all.”
We have news from other local clubs too. The Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club tell us no flower arranging skills are necessary, you can enjoy watching floral designers produce arrangements. New members and visitors are welcome (the next meeting is the first Tuesday in February). The Bishop’s Stortford Lawn Tennis Club is pleased to update us that that their two new canopy covered Padel courts should be opening by the end of January! We also hear from TUBS about early 2024 clear up dates, volunteers are always welcome to help tidy up the town. Find out more inside about all these.
Bishops Stortford January Charity Updates
A volunteer at Bishop’s Stortford Scouts tells us why she volunteers and the Scouts highlight growth plans and the range of volunteering opportunities available in the district. Plus, Stortford Canoe Club share their success at the recent Stortford Sprint Regatta at which special guest Laura Sugar MBE, the Tokyo Paralympic gold medallist and reigning KL3 World Champion, attended.
In other charity news, Bishop’s Stortford ‘Cards for Bravery’, who support children through the distribution of handmade cards, bravery packages and activity packs, would welcome support in terms of volunteering, funding, partnerships and donations. Additionally, we have an article from St Elizabeth’s, a local charity which supports 100 children and adults living with epilepsy and other complex needs, with information about what they do and ways in which you may be able to help them. These charities would be very pleased to hear from you.
The Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford share an insight into the work of a small team, each with a full-time job and family, who have been making trips to Ukraine to deliver aid and, more recently, to also provide certified first aid training courses. This team, who have spoken to the Rotary Club, plan to make more trips in 2024. It’s a very moving and inspiring story to read.
We also have a range of primary and secondary school news and are reminded by the Bishop’s Stortford Library about the vast numbers of books, magazines, newspapers and online reading available – why not pop in?
Enjoy your magazine and thank you very much for your support.
With best wishes
