Community Commemoration and Celebration
Many centenary celebrations are happening in the town this year and one is Nostalgia Day on 9th November at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. This will capture the centenary story of Dorringtons the bakers with the young people of Diverse Performing Arts presenting fascinating musical reminicences of cakes and baking – real history of the town with the Local History Society and a celebration cake to be cut. Dorringtons have a connection with Sawbridgeworth Airfield as they supplied rock cakes to the RAF canteen there in World War Two.
Also with this being the 75th anniversary of D-Day there will be displays and information from these events. Children will be able to take part in activities connected with Remembrance. Bowls Club, United Services Club and Gardens and Allotments Show are also celebrating their 100th birthdays this year.
If you would like to go to Sawbridgeworth Airfield Memorial, where you will be welcome to lay a cross, please be at the Memorial Hall at 10am – there will be a minibus available to take you to the airfield and bring you back by 11.30am.
Refreshments will be available in the Hall from 11.30am and a pay bar from 12.15pm. Join in commemorations and recollections and finish the day with rousing patriotic songs.
This is a free event but donations are very welcome which will all go to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Please be generous as street collections are slowly being reduced by new laws.
