The Hundred Parishes Society has devised a series of interesting walks from railway stations on the West Anglia main line. The full description of each walk, together with a route map, photos and information about points of interest, can be downloaded free from the Walks section of the Hundred Parishes Society’s website:
Routes start or finish at most stations from Harlow to Whittlesford, and also Ware and St Margarets on the Hertford East branch line.
At the southern end of these walks is an interesting circular route (number 10) that starts and finishes at Harlow Town station. The 6-mile route explores some lovely countryside just north of Harlow. This is an area that is earmarked for dramatic change under plans to build “Harlow North”, but for now it offers many delights. Walking boots are recommended. Most of the route is along footpaths, quiet country lanes and the towpath beside the Stort Navigation. It passes through the hamlets of Gilston and Eastwick, each of which has a pub. It is always advisable to check opening times beforehand.
If anyone would like to walk the whole distance from Sawbridgeworth to Whittlesford, the Hundred Parishes Society has provided all you need. As well as the four alternative routes between Newport and Audley End stations (described in past editions), the following list may be helpful:
Route 8 – Sawbridgeworth to Bishop’s Stortford – 5 miles.
Route 9 – Bishop’s Stortford to Stansted Mountfitchet. – 6 miles.
Route 12 – Stansted Mountfitchet to Elsenham – 4 miles.
Route 5 – Elsenham to Newport – 7 miles.
Routes 6, 11, 15 or 16 – Newport to Audley End (from 3.5 miles to 11).
Route 13 – Audley End to Great Chesterford – 8 miles.
Route 14 – Great Chesterford to Whittlesford – 5 miles.
Happy walking!
