‘Living Positively with a Disability’ Headway Suffolk Conference

Keynote speakers will give a range of presentations charity Headway Suffolk’s annual Conference focused around Living Positively with a Disability on 17 May at Kesgrave Conference Centre.
The full day of Conference speakers are:
Dr Tom Adams | Neuro Rehab Lead, Sleep Unlimited
Dr Adams is Neuro Rehab Lead at Sleep Unlimited, the largest company of sleep experts in the UK, and he will give a presentation on how to get a good night’s sleep.
He is a clinical psychologist with particular interests in neuropsychology (the study of interaction between brain and behaviour) and working with people with cognitive impairments.
Dr Adams is also Senior Clinical Psychologist in Neuropsychology at NHS Walkergate Park, a centre for Neurorehabilitation and Neuropsychiatry.
Dr Charlotte Brierley | Neurology Consultant, West Suffolk Hospital NHS Trust
Dr Charlotte Brierley is a neurologist who runs the neuromuscular clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for adult patients with neuromuscular disease, and a consultant neurologist at West Suffolk Hospital.
Prior to this, Dr Brierley spent three years at the Brain Repair Centre in Cambridge, where she gained her PhD in research on treatment strategies for multiple sclerosis, and was also a consultant neurologist at Ipswich Hospital.
Charlotte returns to the conference to give a presentation on ‘what is a headache?’
Baroness Murphy of Aldgate
Baroness Murphy is Vice-President at the Alzheimer’s Society and will give a presentation on the challenges of dementia care and what can be done by government and other organisations.
She trained as a psychiatrist and became the Foundation Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of London and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Baroness Murphy is a politically independent peer in the House of Lords, where she has a special interest in mental health and social care.
Amanda Cousins | Chief Operating Officer, UKABIF
Amanda has over 35 years of experience within the NHS in operational management, strategic planning and commissioning
An Occupational Therapist by clinical background, Amanda is a Chief Operating at the United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum and co-founded the Norfolk and Waveney Acquired Brain Injury Network.
Amanda is also a freelance consultant in neurological rehabilitation, community therapy and recovery support models, as well as maintaining an interest in research in the fields of stroke and acquired brain injury. She will present on brain injury rehabilitation regionally and nationally.
Pepper the Robot | London Robots
Pepper is the first robot with the ability to recognise principal human emotions and adapt his own behaviour, using sensors to monitor what is going on around him before making independent decisions.
Pepper is designed to be a real every day companion with the ability to communicate, as well as perceive emotions and to be kind and endearing.
Pepper has been used in social care settings by local authorities, including as a “dementia-friendly robot”, and was used in a study with care home residents, which found they responded positively and saw an improvement in their wellbeing following interaction with Pepper.
Delegates will also hear personal stories from Headway Suffolk clients and families, as well an update on the charity’s services and future following Covid from CEO Helen Fairweather.
