Classic Fish Pie Recipe - A Comforting and Satisfying Meal | Flyer Magazines

This classic fish pie recipe is a comforting and satisfying meal that is perfect for a cold winter night. The flaky fish, creamy sauce, and cheesy mashed potatoes are all combined in this one dish to create a truly delicious and satisfying meal.

Ingredients:

  • 500g mixed white fish fillets (e.g., cod, haddock, pollock), skinless and boneless, cut into bite-sized chunks
  • 200g raw peeled prawns
  • 400ml whole milk
  • 50g unsalted butter
  • 50g all-purpose flour
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 leek, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 200g frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill (optional)
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 750g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 50g grated cheddar cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C.
  2. In a large saucepan, place the fish fillets and prawns. Pour in the milk, and gently heat over medium-low heat. Simmer the fish and prawns for about 5 minutes until they are just cooked through. Using a slotted spoon, remove the fish and prawns from the milk, and set them aside. Reserve the milk for later use.
  3. In the same saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until they become soft and translucent.
  4. Stir in the flour, and cook for a minute or two to form a roux. Gradually add the reserved milk, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth. Allow the sauce to simmer gently for a few minutes until it reaches a creamy consistency.
  5. Add the sliced leek, frozen peas, chopped parsley, dill (if using), and lemon zest to the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  6. Add the cooked fish and prawns back into the sauce, carefully mixing them in without breaking up the fish chunks too much.
  7. Transfer the fish mixture into a deep ovenproof dish.
  8. In a separate saucepan, cook the peeled and chopped potatoes in salted boiling water until they are tender. Drain the potatoes and mash them with a potato masher or a fork. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the fish mixture in the ovenproof dish. Use a fork to create a textured surface on the mashed potatoes.
  10. Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese on top of the mashed potatoes.
  11. Place the fish pie in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until the mashed potatoes turn golden brown, and the filling is bubbling and cooked through.
  12. Remove the fish pie from the oven and allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving.

This recipe is also a great way to use up leftover fish or prawns. If you don’t have any on hand, you can substitute another type of white fish, such as tilapia or halibut. You can also add other vegetables to the filling, such as carrots, broccoli, or mushrooms.

To make this recipe even more delicious, serve it with a side of crusty bread or your favorite green salad.

Enjoy!

Here are some additional tips for making the perfect fish pie:

  • Use a good quality fish that is firm and flaky.
  • Don’t overcook the fish, as it will become tough.
  • Make sure the sauce is thick and creamy.
  • Don’t overcrowd the ovenproof dish, as the fish pie will not cook evenly.
  • Allow the fish pie to rest for a few minutes before serving, so that the flavors can meld together.

This recipe is sure to become a family favorite!
