Council donates £10,000 to fight Schools’ Appeal
August 30, 2011 by flyeronline · Leave a Comment
The Town Council has agreed to donate £10,000 to Bishop’s Stortford Civic Federation to support the campaign against the proposed construction of two schools on green belt land at Whittington Way, and associated housing development on vacated Town-Centre sites. Both Town and District Councils rejected the planning applications when they were submitted, however the schools have appealed against the decision. The appeal will be heard by the planning inspectorate in September 2011. In a meeting held by the Town Council in 2010 there was overwhelming support from the public for the Councils objections to the proposals.

Local charity raising the roof
August 18, 2011 by flyeronline · Leave a Comment
Sudbury-based charity, the Suffolk Befriending Scheme has been raising the roof this week, having just
enjoyed one of its most unique activity days yet! On the 10th August, Chalkstone Community Centre in
Haverhill played host to a group of musicians in the making who spent the day learning to DJ, play a host of
musical instruments and rap like a superstar!
‘The day was all about people being able to discover skills they never thought they had,’ explains Myra
Cawtheray, the event co-ordinator. ‘It’s been a great opportunity to be a part of something different. Most of
the people who took part were between the ages of 16 and 24, and they couldn’t wait to learn how to DJ, rap
and play some seriously cool musical instruments.’
The somewhat unusual event was run by music workshop tutors, Amp and Deck. The musical duo guided
guests through a plethora of disciplines, showing them the basics of writing music and lyrics, and even how
to record a track! ‘The group loved the special opportunity and it gave each guest an experience they’ll never
forget,’ says Myra.
Shirley Moore, Chief Executive Officer of Suffolk Befriending Scheme, says ‘It’s a great feeling, being able to
boost peoples’ confidence by putting on events which will allow them to try things they’ve never done before.
We are committed to providing a wide range of activity days all over the county, and have plenty coming up
over the next few weeks!’
