PPI High Court decision – a win for the FSA and consumers

April 21, 2011 by flyeronline · Leave a Comment

The High Court has today handed down the long-awaited Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) judgement and upheld the FSA’s new rules on how complaints should be handled.
The banks’ trade body, the British Bankers’ Association, requested a judicial review last October into the Financial Services Authority’s (FSA) new PPI complaints handling rules, which told banks to look at old complaints and contact people who have been missold protection.
Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com, comments:
“The banks have behaved abominably. They’ve deliberately mis-led reclaimers by telling them everything is on hold and used the memory of the bank charges hold to make it seem legitimate.
“The hold’s not been agreed by the FSA or Ombudsman, who have both lambasted it, and has potentially left 100,000s – each trying to reclaim £1,000s – wrongly in limbo and the Ombudsman over-stretched.
“If this goes to appeal, as expected, they cannot be allowed to continue. I believe they should be fined for the way they’ve tried to manipulate the system to consumers’ detriment.
“It’s time we had a system of collective consumer redress. The fact the banks can deliberately reject claims to put people off taking it further, even though the vast majority of those who go to the Ombudsman win, is against natural justice and needs to stop.”

LANDGUARD FORT, FELIXSTOWE

April 21, 2011 by flyeronline · Leave a Comment

Art at Landguard Fort starts the new season with the project ‘SUBSTANCE’.

The project, led by artist Valerie Inns, has won funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council as well as local support and has an ambitious Art and Heritage programme.
‘Substance’ focuses on the rich array of materials and construction techniques used to build the extraordinary structure that is Landguard Fort. Inspired by heritage materials and traditional building and making skills, the artist has researched and developed new work for exhibition at the fort alongside a series of heritage events.
The project started with a week of workshops for local schools with over 150 children taking part and getting to grips with brick making and firing. The workshops were hugely successful with many trainee brick makers desperate to return to the fort for the Open Day workshops.
This week a new model arrived to aid interpretation at the fort. Built from hundreds of tiny bricks by model maker Ian Pittock, it demonstrates the construction of an arched ceiling or barrel vault.
On the 27th April the fort will host a ‘brick’ seminar where experts (both academic and practical) will come together to focus on the building of the 18th century fort. The event is open to the public but places are limited and need to be booked by contacting the fort : operations@landguard.com
OPEN DAY – Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May, 2011 sees the fort open FREE OF CHARGE and offering FREE WORKSHOPS for children and adults. This will be a wonderful opportunity to tackle materials and develop skills as experts in brick and lime mortar building and rope making offer their expertise. There will also be a demonstration of flint knapping and flint wall building.

Cobbold display at Ipswich park centre

April 9, 2011 by flyeronline · Leave a Comment

Cobbolds and Catchpole bring family history to life

A new historical display is to be installed in the Reg Driver Visitor Centre in Ipswich’s Christchurch Park this weekend.

The display mainly tells the enduring story of Ipswich legend Margaret Catchpole but also shows something of the life of the Cobbold family in Ipswich.

It is being provided by the Cobbold Family History Trust, and Keeper Anthony Cobbold said: “The display which includes hundreds of illustrations will be interesting to followers of the Margaret Catchpole story and students of local history, particularly those attracted by the Cobbold family’s involvement in the brewery and Ipswich Town FC. Also featured is Felix Thornley Cobbold, who gave Christchurch Mansion to the Borough and whose centenary was celebrated in 2009.”

The display will be inaugurated during the weekend of 8th, 9th and 10th April and for that weekend only the trust will be showing all of Richard Cobbold’s original watercolour illustrations for the Margaret Catchpole story, together with two albums of Regency scissor-cut paper Valentines made nearly 200 years ago by Richard’s mother, Elizabeth. Anthony Cobbold will be on hand throughout and the display opened by the Chair of the Friends of Christchurch Park, Richard Edgar Wilson, on the Friday at 10am.
