Cemetery Lane closure

February 23, 2011 by flyeronline · Leave a Comment

Ipswich’s Cemetery Lane will be closed to all traffic and pedestrians from next Monday (21st February) between the cemetery gates and Belvedere Road as the Borough Council undertakes pavement repairs.  Access to the cemetery from Colchester Road will remain available at all times.

The work has been scheduled for half-term week as the Council recognises that many pupils do use the lane to walk to and from school. The pavement will be opened from 28th February but that section of the road will still be closed to traffic as work will begin on patching holes in the road surface.

A Council spokesman said that, following the resolution of legal matters regarding the ownership of the road, the much needed repairs had been included in Suffolk County Council’s road repairs programme and would be carried out by the Borough Council as its contractor next week. This section of the road will remain closed to traffic after the patching work is finished until the surface is replaced in May, when it will then be safe for motorists to use.

Meanwhile, the Council is considering an option to make this part of Cemetery Lane (from the cemetery gates to Belvedere Road) one-way in a north-south direction. No decisions will be made until a consultation exercise is completed.

Cobbolds and Catchpole bring family history to life

February 23, 2011 by flyeronline · Leave a Comment

A new historical display is to be installed in the Reg Driver Visitor Centre in Ipswich’s Christchurch Park for the next two years.

The display mainly tells the enduring story of Ipswich legend Margaret Catchpole (2012 is the 250th anniversary of her birth) but also shows something of the life of the Cobbold family in Ipswich.

It is being provided by the Cobbold Family History Trust, and Keeper Anthony Cobbold said: “The display which includes hundreds of illustrations will be interesting to followers of the Margaret Catchpole story and students of local history, particularly those attracted by the Cobbold family’s involvement in the brewery and Ipswich Town FC.

“Also featured is Felix Thornley Cobbold, who gave Christchurch Mansion to the Borough and whose centenary was celebrated in 2009. We are pleased to be providing this display and are grateful to the Borough Council for agreeing to house it in the Reg Driver Visitor Centre.”

The display will be inaugurated during the weekend of 8th, 9th and 10th April and for that weekend only the Trust will be showing all of Richard Cobbold’s original watercolour illustrations for the Margaret Catchpole story, together with two albums of Regency scissor-cut paper Valentines made nearly 200 years ago by Richard’s mother, Elizabeth.  Anthony Cobbold will be on hand throughout.

The weekend will also see a paper-cutting demonstration by a talented mother and daughter team. Lois Cordelia, the highly regarded Suffolk artist, will demonstrate paper-cutting by scalpel while her mother, Erika Bülow-Osborne will show “Scherenschnitt”, the traditional German scissor-cutting technique favoured by Elizabeth Cobbold.

The Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Jane Chambers, will get proceedings under way by unveiling the display at 10am on Friday 8th April.
