Set in a Girls’ Finishing School in Nice, The Boy Friend is a delightful spoof of 1920’s musical numbers and is billed as a night of pure escapism. “In selecting The Boy Friend for this year’s production, the girls have had an opportunity to learn new skills in drama, music and dance for a fun and stylish piece,” Helen Leeder explained. Preparations this year have included teaching 28 girls to tap dance and Charleston for the show’s musical numbers.
Helen Leeder joined the school in 1985 and remembers well her first production, Hsiung’s Lady Precious Stream, and was immediately bowled over by the total commitment of the pupils. Amberfield School has continued to produce a variety of unusual plays, and has challenged the pupils with Shakespeare and Brecht in the intervening years.
In 2003 Helen oversaw the building of a new Drama Studio, with state of the art sound and light technology, providing an exciting and dynamic environment for the many Amberfield pupils who take part in school productions and those who choose to take Drama at GCSE .
“The Boy Friend” takes place at Amberfield School from Tuesday 16th to Friday 19th March. Tickets are available from the school on 01473 659265.
