Work starts on the next phase of Felixstowe improvements
February 2, 2010 by flyeronline
Construction starts on the latest phase of work designed to improve Felixstowe for residents, businesses and visitors on the 1 February 2010.
This is the next phase of the scheme promoted by Suffolk County Council, Felixstowe Town Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council under the Felixstowe Futures banner. The previous phases have seen improvements to Convalescent Hill.
This stage of the project will involve improvements to the main shopping road in Felixstowe, Hamilton Road between the Cobbold Road and Orwell Road junctions. The scheme will provide a level block paved surface from shop front to shop front, with attractive seating areas, improving the shopping environment for residents and visitors.
Currently the road is dominated by motor vehicles and the road safety record is poor compared to similar towns in Suffolk. A limited number of disabled parking spaces and loading areas will be provided, however general parking will not be permitted under the new street design. This type of scheme has produced considerable road safety benefits at other locations in the UK and Europe.
During the work Hamilton Road will be closed to through traffic but deliveries to the shops and some disabled parking will be allowed. People will be able to walk along Hamilton Road to use the shops. Work will start at around 8am and will generally finish by 5pm – however some evening and weekend working may be required throughout the project.
This section of the project is due to start on 1 February 2010 and will be completed by the end of October 2010.
Further information about the scheme (new window) can be found on the Suffolk County Council website.
